if you live on a dirt road, I suggest NOT going with a K&N style filter. They have been shown to be unable to trap as much dirt and particles as a stock paper filter, and personally I'd rather have a clean engine then 3rwhp...

The Cai is pointless if you're going with the z hood. You won't get turbulent air 'cause of the maf screen, but you won't see any gains because ram air won't "ram" below 300mph. At 100mph, there is only 1/4 of a psi, below that speed, you just dcrease the vacuum of the car sucking in air. Yes, your car will draw cooler air from outside resulting on more oxygen, but ram air is overrated.
Don't get me wrong, i'm a big fan and love the hoods, but as far as self fabricated systems go, I saw someone route air ducts from the front of their 'camaro to the bottom of the ram air box. I will try to link it.

agreed hoods pointless for ram air..only really for looks or less weight, my custom ram air and sux's is proven i gained anywhere from 10-15 rwhp over a ftra setup, depending on the run

Default Hoods ram air and pressure

Removing the baffles in the hood will not really help. It is not a sealed system and it sits too low on the hood. For a ram air system to function, it must be completely sealed.

For a positive pressure effect (beyond standard atmospheric pressure), you do need extremely high speeds. However, you are missing a vary important point. A normally aspirated engine is not 100% volumetric efficient. A fuel injected engine may be 85-90 % efficient. A ram air kit does not need to apply much additional pressure to get the engine closer to 100 % efficiency. That is why you will see cars with the FTRA pick up fuel economy when combined with the colder air.

Check out www.installuniversity.com . They did a good scientific write up. Keep in mind their testing was only in the 8th mile and results will improve as you fo faster.

I run a FTRA style setup with a WS6 hood and lower airbox. I run it wide open, baffles out, no "sealing" It has worked great on my car.
