Default help with 160 thermostat please!!!

i just ordered an slp 160 thermostat installed it and filled everything back up and it is still running at the stock temp. i know that the fans dont engage untill 215 but i took it for a drive (temp is like 45 outside) and it stayed at 195. then when i got home and let it sit for like 1 minute it was at 210. is it stuck, defective, or is there an instalation trick or what. by the way does the slp thermostat say MotoRad Germany at the top??? just wonderin if WS6 store sent me the wrong one. Thanks, chase

The 99's and up are just dummy guages that read about 210 even if the coolant temperature is 170. I hooked up a scanner to mine, and when it was 173, the guage read right around 200 which was what it read with the stock thermostat.

Yeah an aftermarket guage will give accurate readings. I'm not sure who makes the thermostat. It could just be made for them to their specs by someone else.

Mine is the same way. I was pissed until I heard about the gauge myself. Just know that that t'stat will open faster.
p.s. do you have the HypertechIII programmer? (or similar) because you need to let the computer know that you have the 160 t'stat, it'll help the function.

figured i'd throw this into here instead of startin a new thread about Tstat's.....But i'm going to be changin my coolant soon..and figured i'd throw in the 160 Thermostat as well. I know it's good to tune the PCM but would not having one mess anything up? I will probably get the tune in a couple weeks or another month...but i wanted to go ahead and put the Tstat in now.
Is that ok to do?

I strongly recommend against that. You run the possibility of getting the engine too cool, or too hot. The t'stat is a regulator. It knows when the best time to introduce coolant and when not to. If you remove it, your flow would be constant. That's not what you want, because your fluid would get very hot as a result. It needs the radiator to cool it off, so w/o a t'stat, the coolant might pass through the important areas @ too high of a rate. All the while passing through the rady too quickly. It needs the stagnation period to cool effectively. As I mentioned earlier, I have both the 160 degree t'stat and a HypertechIII programmer. I do feel that both are neccessary eventually.

While I'm at it, I'll respond to some other questions here (anyone feel free to correct me)

Not having the PCM knowing that you installed a new T'stat is entirely critical, however, as for the fans.....You definitely will want them to know to turn on more in the near future. You can purchase a switch from www.jegs.com to do this very function w/o having a programmer.

I always recommend a true hardwire switch like that if someone doesn't have a programmer. Because even if your shop can program your set up at that time, you'll be reliant on them anytime you make another change to your system. A switch and/or a programmer will ensure that you can always keep that fan function active, regarless of changes or surges, etc.....

140 is too low; try setting them to

ON = 185
OFF = 175

On my old car i had my elctric fan wired up to an ignition switch so when the ignition was on the fans would come on and it regulated the temp perfectly... it takes a little longer to warm up but thats it... i dont see how a lower temp fan setting would be wrong

I personally would not want my fans running 100% of the time, and certainly not during winter start-ups. I still get all the benfit of the cooler stat, and my fans get some down time like they're supposed to. Just my opinion...

I don't want my fans to run all the time either.
With the swith I mentioned earlier or the use of a programmer, they will stay on a lot, but not all the time

Keith @ Force Fed is sort of a donkeys behind. I had a clutch put in there, and many friends have used them. Some of the guys that work there (Bill, if he still does) are great! Somehow, he always seems to find a way to charge ya a little more, and tell ya something you don't want to hear. KNOW IT ALL

So just BEWARE!
