Grotyohanns and custom Y, install. Worth .3
Here’s was the plan.
On Friday my buddy Mike and I installed my Grotyohann long tube headers. These babies are works of art. Mike and I weren’t too experienced with header installs. We got my car apart in about 4.5 hours. Only seconds after we pulled the last stock manifold. We were graced with the expertise of Ryan Karasek. As soon as we heard the mean sound of Ryan's true duals rumbling down the street. There was relief. With his help. The LTs were on, and the open headers were blasting by 6:oopm.
Here's were the fun began.
I had been hearing a lot of crap about the Grotyohann Y and decided to design my own. The problems was, with out the headers on. I had no real measurements or angles to design a Y pipe. We started the job at 11:30am and got the headers installed by 6:00pm. I had already bought all the stuff for the Y. Mandrel of course. Two 3" ball flanges. Two 3", 90' bends with 3" radius for the passenger side. One 3", 80' bend with 6" radius. One 3", 90' bend with 6" radius. Two 3" extensions. A flowmaster collector with dual 3" in, single 3.5 out. A 3.5" extension and a single dynatech split flow muffler. And lots of clamps. All of the piping was slip fit.
My plan was to clamp the Y together and get it welded later. <We had a club race in the morning and were out of time.> We started to fab the Y. The bends seemed to be right on. I couldn’t believe it. All we had to do was shorten the extensions. The driver side extension had to be flattened a bit but it's good. We decide we needed to weld a spot. So we headed out to Ryan’s place to finish up the Y.
OOhhh!!! Open headers are frickin loud. The coppers would have gotten me for sure if they heard me!!! I had gotten a speeding ticket that mourning going to Mikes. <Dammmm!!!!> So I was really sketchy.
We got to Ryan’s a little before 8:00pm. We started work right away and didn't stop until finished. Besides flattening the tube a little. Everything went together very smoothly. Ryan did all of the welding. We painted the Y, and Ryan help me fab a temporary hanger. <I forgot to buy that. Duuhhh.> We finally finished at midnight.
OOOOhhhhhh baby. I love this Y pipe. O, O, O, Ooohhhhhhhh. It looks soo sweet. The Y pipe went together smoothly. I couldn’t of asked for a better turn out.
We started my baby up and bruuuuuurrrrrr!!!!!!!!
SWEEEEET!!!!!! It sounds soo mean. Their is hardy any rasp at all. We all had to get up early that mourning. We put Ryan’s slicks on for the race and called it a night.
On my first 12.89run I knocked .07 off my best time. WHHooooow!!!! Was I happy? I usually run low 13's. <13.1,-13.2> So 12.89 is at least .3 faster than my average. All day I ran in 12.8's. With 2.0 60fts. This is all on street tires and I spun into 2nd on every run. My best was 12.84 @ 110.57mph. That was a 1.96 60ft, but I hit the rev limiter in 1st and had mean tire spin on the one-two shift. 12.7s will be easily obtainable with drag radials. All in all I am totally pleased with the performance of my new exhaust system. I averaged more than 3 tenth quicker and with good traction I think high 12.6s are possible. <img border="0" alt="[Burnout]" title="" src="graemlins/burnout.gif" />
Thanks Mike, Ryan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

!!!!!Correction!!!!!!! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />
The new setup is worth .6!! I ran at Pacific Raceway tonight. John B let me use his AutoTap. Everything is right on with the stock computer programming. It Just a little rich at WOT, so I leaned out 4% with my MAFT. My timing is no higher then 25 degrees. And I have 0 knock retard. My new best is 12.55 @ 111.6mph, 1.98 60ft. <img border="0" alt="[Fluffy]" title="" src="graemlins/fluffy.gif" /> Yea!!!baby!!!!!!!!!

You definatly need the 12 bolt as your next mod, <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> your rear end will not be happy with much more HP.

Re: Grotyohanns and custom Y, install. Worth .3
I loved reading your story Bado2.It sounds just like mine from last week..even the part about open headers and the drive to midas was very similar.Only problem I am having is gained nothing ,in fact much slower than before..still trying to figure out why..car feels faster..
Anyway what is your full mod list..and is your base at zero..I have my maft at five clicks down to get to approx .890 or so..my trims are the recommended slightly negative at part throttle.
so you are two clicks down on wot and zero base??
Might have to try a run or two at zero base to see what I get for mph..I know there are lots of variables ..what altitude are you at..I still figure I should be at 114 or 115 with all my mods..lid,holley filter, gms maf, ported tb,ls6 intake,b1,asp pulleys, carbon fiber driveshaft and now tts longtubes..I have cats though and cutout.
My best time before headers was a corrected 110mph which seems about right for car with above mods and no headers..?? I might be banging my limiter on my runs..don't powershift so far,car is super heavy..3840 with me in it and half tank or so of gas..or maybe I shifted too low for my cam..can only put limiter at 6600 with my hpp and the sucker revs so freakin fast and I have trouble usually hitting third that I set my harlan to 6100 but even then I shift the 2 to 3 slower than ten snails..I might try no cats on the tts shortly..I find it sounds sweet right now with the cutout just slightly cracked open..heard my b and b will give very little rasp though or could always run a bullet in intermediate pipe right?? Congratulations on your new times..depending on what altitude you are at thats hauling good butt..I need a 12.9 to be a 12.5 usually depending on density air..I am at 1900 but its very hard to get a day below 2400 here..Your car was an m6 right???

Mods in the sig
My 12.55 pass was with a SLP 85mm MAF @ 4% leaner.
The air was really good, Temp was 75. A friend let my use his ATAP to check A/F ratios. I'm getting this A/f gauge this week. It will help alot.

The 12.55 pass was done the Wensday after the Nationals. The track was super stick!!! On average I have been getting low 12.8s high 12.7s at 110.5 The track is Pacific Raceway in WA. It's almost at sea level. <img border="0" alt="[Burnout]" title="" src="graemlins/burnout.gif" />

Bad02WS6, you made the right choice. The Grott y-pipe is so bad I ditched it and had a custom y done too. Once I cut the Grott y apart, I realized it was worse than it even looked from the outside.
Would love to see your pics...

Derty, I just emailed you the pic of the 3" y I had made up with the flowmaster 3 to 3.5 collector, mandrel bends. That's what I used before true duals.
Nice gains!!
