Default Exhausting my options... true dual or Mufflex 4"?

I've been racking my brain for the past two weeks over replacing the entire exhaust system in my Hawk...

Currently I have a set of TTS 1 3/4" long tube headers with TTS cats follwing into a 2.5" Y-pipe and an SLP Loudmouth cat-back. As many of you know, this system doesn't flow incredibly well; it feels as if it's too restrictive on the top end. Low-end and midrange power levels seem very responsive.

Since I'm going with a bigger cam, I feel like now is the time to redo my exhaust system. The TTS system will go for a set of 1 3/4" Grots. What I'm mixed on is a true-dual system vs. 3" Y-pipe. I haven't found anyone locally who can properly set up the true-dual setup I want, which MUST exit the rear.

I was planning to set up 3" mandrel-bent piping off the collectors and into a Dr. Gas X-junction. After the X-junction, dual 2.5" piping will siamese over the axle on the passenger side, passing through a set of 14" bullet resonators and exiting the rear. I haven't found anyone in D/FW who will do this without charging something ridiculous and nobody will touch a car without cats.

As an easy alternative, I could use a 3" Mufflex off-road Y-pipe merging into the 4" Mufflex cat-back. I'm sure flow will be sufficient, but I'll suffer a weight penalty and it certainly won't be cheap. I want this system to last the life of the car and be able to support a bigger cam. I've got ARE S1 heads and a TR 224 cam in it right now, dynoed at 406/387.

How does the Mufflex 3" OR-Y and 4" catback compare to a well-designed 2.5" X-pipe setup? Should I hold out and find someone to set up the true duals for me?

Update: Unless I can find someone who will set up the true duals the way I want, I'm just going to go with a 3" ORY into a dual/dual. The Mufflex system just doesn't seem appealing to me.

Nick's muffler in Plano has done alot of True Dual setups with the X-Pipe and a few with H-Pipes. He can definetly do what you want, but it'll be a little pricey.

You can even use the SLP Loudmouth piping for a True Dual exhaust over the rear if both intermediate pipes go over the axle on the passenger side.

Here's some pics of True Dual with both pipes on the passenger side.

The link is from GMAddict on LS1.com, and he lives in California. I'm not sure where he got the exhaust done though.

Nick doesn't like to mess with the cats, but he could build race pipes that you could bolt on yourself. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

The Dr.Gas X-Pipe I don't think would fit for that setup(I would look into it), so the X-Pipe would probably have to be custom made to fit both pipes like in the link.

I've thought of doing that setup in the link with my GMMG which would be even easier to modify that the Loudmouth since the GMMG has two chambered mufflers. I'll wait till I get headers first though.

Is that 2.5" or 3" piping? I wouldnt bother with dual 2.5" over the axle, a single 3" will flow almost as well and weigh alot less / be alot cheaper. Anyone have pics of dual 3" over the axles?

Thanks for the reply--I'm going to look into Nick's if he can set up a system exactly as you linked in your post--that looks just like what I want to have done. Who's car is that and do you know which shop did that work? Can Nick set up a system without cats?

Based on the performance levels I've seen I would recommend 4" Mufflex if ground clearance is an issue otherwise "X" pipe and 3" duals.
