Default induction cooling.... possible?

Ok well I like to work on both computer and cars and one day I was thinking about peltiers and heat sinks, they go far below freezing the the heat sink usually transfers the heat well. I was thinking is it possible or practical to put one or many peltiers somewhere before the MAF in order to cool the air dramastically with a relatively simple thing. Most of these run on 14.4 volts so there is no need for converting and are about 75W/per unit. Maybe putting a heat sink down into the airbox(after the filter) while being cooled to below freezing with big enough unidirectional fins to catch alot of the passing air and not hurt airflow that much. Anyone tried/seen this done or have thoughts on it? By the way if you dont know about peltiers the other side is where all the heat get shipped to, so it would also need to be in a cool place if possible, or at least have a heat sink on top.

Just thinkin' of new stuff

Since efficiency of these is poor, and you're
powering it off the engine, you'd be wasting
horsepower trying to make it. You can get
maybe 40C temperature drop and 10% heat
removal power efficiency out of a Peltier.
The other issue is that of getting substantial
air contact; the Peltiers are 2"x2" (or less)
flat alumina slabs; you can put a heat sink,
but you add a fair bit of thermal impedance
to add fin area. You need mondo fin area to
cool at high flow.

I think you'd be happier with an ice water
intercooler. You could make your own ice if
you wanted to lug the refrigeration unit
around. The Peltiers are pretty weak at ice
making, due to the delta-T limitations.

Although cooler air makes more power, it's
a little bit compared to what you'd spend
trying to cool it.

Hum, thanks for the reply. I dont understand a couple things. First with only around a 150w total power use how would that be wasting that much? Its not like they are horribly expensive either. I was thinking about putting 2 of them with 2 heatsinks that have fins going all one direction in the top of the lid right before the air collects, this way all the air would have to go through it and depending on how cold the peltier would get, I would at least get a %'age of that. The only part im unsure of this far is if it will cool it by 15 degrees or by a fraction of one <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" />
haha what in the work are you talking about an ice intercooler??????
Thanks

a guy in my automotive technology class at vo-tech told me about how he and some friends put dry ice in the filter box of an old truck. he ssaid that he noticed a real gain in fuel economy and power but had to replace it often if he wanted to keep it so he took it out. but it does cool incoming air but on our cars we don't have the room to do that and cause you have to keep a steady supply its not economical.

Thats why I was thinking of something like a peltier that could run only when the cars on and shouldnt need any over time adjestment, but the dry ice thing sounds cool.

When moving 300-600CFM of air, those little heatsinks cannot dissipate it quick enough. At idle, you would probably see a temperature drop, but that would be about it..
