Default time for a new alternator?

When i start my car. its a very loud squeeling sound. and i look closer at the alternator and it looks like the belt is really lose and wobbly. And when the car isnt warm enough, u can hear it whine every time the belt goes around.. not loudly but you can hear it..New alternator or new serpentine belt?

fwiw = for what it's worth. quelled = subsided with it's own momentum. ie, it worked itself out.

If I were you I would trace the belts that are in that subsystem to the point of identifying if it's the belt or the alternator, and [if the belt] which belt it actually is. If it's just the belt, then great, you're all set verify alignment and offset of the pulley and belt and your done. If it actually is your alternator, you might want to research another place that could 'refresh' the alternator is that's even a possibility. If so, you saved yourself a large component purchase right there. If not, it wouldn't cost any additional to check. If eventually you reach the point you do have to get a new alternater, try a boneyard or salvage yard you should be able to find what you're looking for real cheap. I wish I could be more specific in your line of troubleshooting though there maybe specific diagnostic tools at a mechanic to verify exactly such an accurate thing, good luck.

Of course I was talking extraneously; the tangible difference between a rebuilt unit and one from a bone yard was probably hardly nothing.

It's your a/c belt or pulleys, not your main. There's a tensioner and idler pulley for the a/c system alone, might want to take a look at those.

I would first just take off the a/c belt, see if the noise is gone, if it is, then you know it is isolated to the a/c system, that way your not buying two new belts if one is still good. Also, most times it could be the a/c idler they are known for noise.

Similar question:

I have been told I need a new alternator. My dash lights flicker a lot. I have an odessey pc680 mini battery, and some cables that are somewhat corroded. Is my friend correct by saying replacing the alternator will fix my dash lights from flickering?

FYI--It flickered before my battery change/
