Default Help... How do I get the Grot's on????

I even have the heads off and car on stands and still can't get the drivers side in (i haven't tried the passenger side yet). Is there something i'm missing?? do i need to drop the k-member and the tranny some to get clearance??

any help is appreciated.. it's been 10 weeks of downtime and I finally got my heads in and now i can't get the nice pretty grot's on.

thanks in advance...
Devin.

My friend has them on his car and he does it in his driveway all the time. My advice:

Jack that sucker as high as you can. Pull the steering shaft if you need to. Then you should have enough clearance to slide it out.

Try unbolting trans mount & crossmember let trans down alittle & push trans over to passenger side, use 2x4 between trans & floor to keep trans in place & install drivers header. Then switch to do other side.

that's what is in the way.. how do you move the sterring shaft?? i removed the top bolt, but can't seem to pull it apart. If i can move that i can at least get the drivers side in. as for the pass. side.. i think i'll drop the tranny ..

thanks

There is another 11mm bolt on the rack itself. Follow the shaft down to the other u-joint, search around, and you'll feel it. You have to get it from under the car, behind the rubber apron under there. I use the 11mm socket, a u-joint, a 12 inch extension, and the ratchet. Works perfectly. You have to take the bolt all the way out. Then slide the steering shaft up on the column side, and it will come off the pinion. Then slide it back down and it will come off completely. Just try not to screw up the orientation of it, or your steering wheel will be all whacked.

Ok, no dice... the steering linkage is not in the way anymore.. but i still can't get em' in??
I dropped the 4 engine mount bolts on each side and loosened the k-member and then put the jack under the engine and jacked it up thinking i would have enough clearance.. no dice.. still need about 1" to squeeze them through .

arrrgghhhh!! any other ideas?

I have the 1 7/8" Grot's. I did the install on the garage floor. You have to remove the engine mount on the driver side. Don't need to remove the mount off the block, just the mount off the k member. It works best to use a stubby ratchet wrench. Jack the motor up as high as possible and you may want to take off the oil filter. It should slide up, just be very patient because it goes in using one angle only. When you find it it will pop right up. It is a pain in the ***, but I can now do a set (with the stock exhaust already off) in about 3 hours now.

Always from the bottom. The angle is too funky to get the twisting right. I just do it from underneath now. No problem.

Is the header ever touching the floor when putting it in? Grots require the car to be WAAAAAAAAY up in the air, otherwise you gotta start moving stuff around outta the way.

Get it up higher.

You had to remove things?? I'm sorry. I thought I was going to when doing mine as I was on jack stands as well. You have to get them so the Collector is at a 90 degree angle to the floor and then after a few minutes of yelling and cursing and hitting your head on the ground they somehow magically go right up and in. I just had to pull my drain plug and oil filter...

Depends on the size headers you have and how high you can get the car in the air. There was no way for me to get the 1 7/8 headers any higher than a 60 degree angle to the floor. As a result you pull four little bolts and the engine mount. Jack it up and you're in. If you have a lift you can probably get them up there quickly.

Got them in finally, I had to take off the steering linkage and jack it up to the 3rd notch on the stands.. then jacked the engine up about 2" and it finally went up there. the pass side was a breeze.

Thanks for all the help guys.. as usual the best place on the web to get help on my car.
You guys rule...

You guys are kidding right?? I just pulled my passenger side header out a few weeks ago in my driveway. I had the car about 28 inches off the ground. When i did the initial install, I also had my heads off(1st H/C package-TPIS)and used a lift; they slid right in from the bottom. I can't believe you're having problems with the HEADS OFF!
