Default wrapped headers?

I know this will sound kind of stupid, but has anyone wrapped their headers (slp or flp or hookers)? I'm talking about that stuff that looks like medical bandage type stuff. Just a thought to keep wires from burning and stuff in the engine compartment. Probably totally wrong though, but figured I'd ask.

Thanks

When I had my '85 IROC I wrapped the headers before I put them on...it has to be done correctly or the wrap will not last. It really works good...I was able to put my hand on the header tubes while the engine was running.

I used header wrap and the silicone spray that extends it`s life.
It was the only way I could put up with the tinny, header sound that I hate so much.

I know on a street car the wrap will hold in moisture & rot the headers. Never tried a coated set.

I heard wrapping them for street cars will fatigue the metal in a year, and will cause them to crack apart. Is this really true or not I'm not sure. What I did instead was wrap everything near the headers both in the engine compartment and underneath the car that needed it with 2000 deg radiant heat tape .

The header wrap wives' tale is from the days of $80 redneck headers made out of tin foil. The only header I've ever heard of cracking from wrap was on a turbo Honda with a mild steel header, and EGT's in the 900-1000'F range.
How much moisture do you think the wrap will hold in when your pipes get to 400' every time you start the car?

Another thing, if you change oil and drip oil on your wrap, it will absorp it. Could be a fire hazard. Coating them is the preferred way.

Header wrap will cause cracks in 409 and 304 stainless headers over a period of time.

As far as the coated soft iron headers such as Hooker, FLP, Grotts, or Macs .... not sure.

Header wrap seems to work ok in trailered race cars, but on headers that see continual heat cycles (ie: daily driver), I wouldn't use it.

Just my 2 cents....

thanks for all the thoughts guys. I figured it probably wasn't a bright idea on a street car, but I hadn't seen that question asked before so I thought I'd give it a try.

Maybe this will help with the debate at hand...
I just bought some used MACs, the previous owner had used header wrap for OVER a year on a daily driven car. When the wrap was removed there was NO surface rust or corrosion on the tubes (except up near/on the flange where the wrap didn't cover) If I didn't know of a cheap and local source for coating I would've wrapped them again (approx. $40). No way in hell i'd pay $250 for a ceramic coating; that's the quote I got from JetHot.

I paid $150 locally, coated in/out and warranty. Plus, the owner is a hell of a nice guy. Support small business's!!!!

I header wrapped FLP`s.. I sold them later and when I took off the wrap, they looked better underneath the wrap then the rest of the header.
Cracking,rusting?? Not even close.
