Default Summit Protorque Starters ? Anyone using one ?

Here is a link:

Just curious if anyone on here is using one of these and if they are having success with it. I need one for my '99 motor swap and just wanted to be sure that I will be happy with it.

Any feedback is great. Thanks!

Interesting. I didn't even know there was one made for this engine.

It looks shorter than stock, but takes up a little more room on top.

You may need a remote solenoid for it too. I can't tell from the picture if it has a solenoid built-in or not.

Thinking of the same starter. At $143 it looks tempting.

Anyone using this or suggest something better?

Great price, but the stockers are proven. Our starters have plenty of power for even big strokers, I'd get a price on an OEM unit before I went experimenting.

Looks nice, and it looks to have the solenoid built in on the bottom. But what is wrong with the stocker?

Apparently nothing is wrong with stockers. But I just bought a crate motor which didn't come with a starter. The price on this summit gear reduction starter is less than a stock unit from Autozone.

The one thing that caught my eye is it looks like the cable lug is on the block side of the unit. Does say the GM versions have 4 mounting positions. But if that means the motor could be rotated around the mount it would hang below the gear. Wouldn't leave much room for exhaust.

A gm replacement starter lists for $324.00. I ended up just installing a powermaster xs starter. If interested there is a thread with pics going on in the drag racing forum.
