Default modifying stock thermostat....

I came across this on ls1info.com, who on here has done this and did it work well? Also what did you use for shims?

I did it and it worked just as well as a $50 thermostat. I used a small piece of a stainless steel machine screw (#10 I think, roughly 3/16 diameter). I used stainless so it wouldn't rust. After I cut a small piece off, I ground it down and used a set of digital calipers to measure it.

I ran one of these for about two years on my 98 and it worked perfectly. I too used a 3/16" spacer and it made the thermostat behave like a 160 unit.

Can someone please post the details of this T-stat mod? As has been said, the tech-ls1.com link is dead.

Thanks for knowledgable replys.

Enjoy your cars.

Try this link to get to LS1-tech:

Web.archive.org for LS1-tech.com

Whenever a site goes away and you still want to try to access it, try http://web.archive.org/ and then the old url. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

I used this mod several weeks ago. I used tin foil as a spacer/simm. ...works really great! ...the best part is it is free!!!!

Reading the Info article, I understand the principle and al that, but the unclear thing to me is the whole shim thing. Team ZR-1 what did you make your shim out of? And does the shim just sit in the little dimple at the top of the shaft? If so, then I assume the shaft it-self does not move and the pressure of the return spring holds the shim in place right. TIA.

Charlie.

I've modded a couple t-stats and the best shim is a daisy bb.... .177 opens the t-stat about 165 degrees and the engine will run around 172 in 72 degree air.

Let's try this again. The shim is held in place by shaft which is exerting spring pressure right? So the shaft itself does not move, and the shim has no real way to become dislodged? Thanks for the BB tip, what ingenuity.

Charlie.
