Ok, I have the infamous squeak under the hood. I changed the idler pulley and the sound came back. I see on the TSB it says to change the generator bracket as well. Is this the bracket the idler pulley bolts into? Has anyone changed this? car is no longer under warranty

SUBJECT: Accessory Drive Belt Squeak/Chirp Noise (Install New Double Row Idler Pulley, Generator Bracket and Serpentine Belt)

MODELS:
1998-2000 Chevrolet Camaro
1998-2000 Pontiac Firebird
Built Prior to VIN Breakpoint Y2107225 with 5.7L V8 Engine (VIN G - RPO LS1)

CONDITION
Some customers may comment on a squeak/chirp noise coming from the accessory drive serpentine belt. The noise will be most noticeable at idle and low engine speeds.

CAUSE
The serpentine belt squeak/chirp noise may be caused by misalignment between the idler pulley and crankshaft pulley. A slight rocking motion of the idler pulley causes the misalignment, which results in noise.

CORRECTION
To correct this condition on vehicles built prior to the above VIN breakpoint, install the new generator bracket, double row idler pulley and serpentine belt following Service Manual procedures.

That web site is no longer around but you should be able to get all the parts info from your dealer parts guy. What web site did you get your info from? Good luck.

Looks like I will have to take off the alternator, swap the bracket, then put it back on. Hopefully it won't be too hard. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" />

I just did this a couple of days ago. Not hard at all, took me about 30 minutes to do the idler pulley, bracket, and belt.

If I remember correctly, the Idler pulley does bolt on to the Alternator bracket.

There is one bolt that is on the back side of the Alternator that was hard to get to. I had to use a piveting socket head to get at it.
