Default DELCO battery = leaking piece of junk.

I have been having electrical problems the last few weeks. First car would not crank, found positive side cable a little loose. I tightened it and the car started problem solved right? Wrong. Saturday same thing. Upon inspection I find corrosion coming out of the battery cable near the connector on the battery. So I go to Chevy and get a new cable. Ii talked to my buddy in the parts dept. and he saiys that the Delco batterys are junk to get rid of it because they leak at the connectors. I get home and disconnect the battery and low and behold the side of the battery is soaking wet with leaking battery acid. I ****** the battery out of the car and run to Intertstate and get a Optima red top. While I am at Interstate the saleman tells me about how crappy the Delco batteries are. He says that the terminals are installed by a third party co. that allow air bubbles to get in the seals when they install the terminals. He says after a while the fumes from the acid eat through the air pockets and eventually the terminal starts moving sround. Once this happens the acid is able to leak around the edges. This is just a warning to keep an eye on your battery. It ate the paint off the section below the tray and dripped down on the sway bar and the front of the alternator.

Later.

Had that happen to mine also. I was under the car changing the oil and noticed all the white crustys on the frame rail, sway bar, and AC compressor clutch.
Ate throught the paint and everything was rusty. I am going to have to sand down the framerail and recoat it. The sway bars are getting replaced so that won't be a problem.

Delco battery= junk!! Especially if they have that insulation jacket around them i.e. sport utilities, trucks, etc... Most will leak even with 6k miles, but they are covered under warranty. The problem is that they corrode a lot of stuff. I saw a new envoy, with less than 6k miles on it, with corroded battery tray, frame, etc.... not what you should get when you pay $35 grand on a sport utility. Corvettes, I caught my leak before it corroded through the electrical connections underneath of the battery tray <img border="0" title="" alt="[Mad]" src="gr_images/icons/mad.gif" /> . I would definitely change the battery out to something else, if I currently owned a delco battery...... IMO

Apparently it's a very common problem. Same thing happened to my 98 while it was still under warranty. They replaced the battery (with another Delco unfortunately) sanded & repainted all the corrosion & even removed the plastic wire harness & cleaned all the wires that were inside that harness with baking soda & water. Said they see it a lot.

The original Delco battery in my car just died on me this week. It lasted 5 years with no problems. Maybe I just got lucky.

My Delco battery was on its way out. I could tell because the trip odometer was resetting itself nearly everytime I started the car. I got rid of it before it left me stranded somewhere or leaked. I read here at ls1tech that the batteries with the yellow stickers were bad. Mine had a yellow sticker.
