Well, I am halfway through installing one. Getting the stock pulley off about killed me. I destroyed one cheap-o $9.99 O'Reilly puller, and nearly destroyed a Craftsman $39.99 puller trying to get that thing off. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" /> I suspect that the mechanic who installed my cam didn't grease the pulley when he reinstalled it on the shaft. And I think he reused the stock bolt because it was already loose when I went to remove it. Oops.

Anyway, I was really concerned about putting that much pressure on the threads inside the crank. I was worried that the pressure needed to break the pulley loose and get it moving would've sheared them off. Doesn't seem as though that happened, fortunately.

Is it possible you cross-threaded the bolt?

I'll be installing the ASP pulley when I get home from work tonight. I'll post back up if I have any problems with it.

Default Need Help ASAP On Pulley Problem!!!!

I am freaking out here! I just installed the asp underdirve crank pulley and when I started the car I noticed little metal filings coming from behind the bolt! Please don't tell me that I shaved them off the crank <img border="0" title="" alt="[Mad]" src="gr_images/icons/mad.gif" /> ! The first time I put the bolt on I didn't put any oil behind it so do you think it could be the metal on metal of the pulley to the washer on the bolt? I took it out and put oil on it and I ran it and didn't notice any shavings this time. I am just praying I didn't ruin my crank! Has anyone else experienced this type of problem after an asp pulley install? Prolly not but please someone tell me what I'm in for. I only ran the car for about 40 seconds tops!

Jeremy

I think I may know what you saw. I used the old bolt to press the ASP pulley on. When I removed the bolt, it had shaved off a small amount of the soft aluminum from the pulley. Wasn't a big deal. I torqued the old bolt to the recomended 240 ft lbs, and that crank and crank bolt is pretty darn strong, so I doubt you did any damage to the crank. It was most likely just some of the aluminum from the pulley.

Thanks alot CySevans. I think your right. The more I thought about it the more it seemed like it couldn't of been the crank. I think it was just the bolt rubbing on the pulley. That pulley is pressed damn tight on that crank and I don't think that it could of spun on that pulley. Thanks for the info on how yours went on! I feel a little better now. Also how much did you torque the new bolt down too? Did you do 37 lbs and a 120 degree turn? Or a specific torque #?

Jeremy

Jeremy </strong></font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Well, yes and no. I torqued it to 37, then tried to go another 120 degrees, and it started to turn the drivetrain (at least it tried) after about 100 degrees or so! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" /> I checked it with the torque wrench, and it was over 140 ft lbs, so I figured with the thread lock and the rubber they put on the heads of the bolts, it wouldn't be coming off anytime soon. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

Why do so many people have trouble with this? Get the longer (16mmX2mmX120mm [can be slightly shorter or longer]) bolt and you won't have these problems. The extra length makes getting the new ASP pulley started onto the crank snout a lot easier than using the stock bolt which is only 103mm long. When removing the stock pulley you put a BIG allen head cap screw into the crank for the puller rod to buck up against after you have removed the stock bolt. You may need a few large flat washers under the head of the allen screw to spread the load. The puller rod centers itself in the hex shaped space in the top of the allen screw. The pulley almost jumps off of the crank. I used a chain wrench on the stock pulley to keep the crank from rotating while breaking the stock bolt loose. This ain't the computer forum it's the EXTERNAL forum. Don't make this so complicated

Yeah I am sensing alot of anger and I didn't even ask how to install it because i got the stock pulley off easy and i put the asp pulley on like a piece of cake. The stock bolt worked fine. I just noticed some shavings and when I looked closer the bolt was just rubbing on the pulley for a sec and it shaved some aluminum off the pulley. Put some oil in there stopped the friction and everything is great! No need to be all salty! I clearly understood the install and it was easy.

i do not like to pull much on the inside threads of the crank I get two bolts with same thread as crank weld them head to head screw it tight into crank then slide a socket over then ( one that just go inside of pulley to align pulley) then use a big washer and nut on the free end of welded unit to pull pulley onto crank this way is easy on the inside threads of crank I also like to change the front seal while pulley is off
