Default To Merge or not to Merge, That is the Question...

Ok, I have really been looking into the Merge collector issue. My question is, does anyone here have expierence with these things? My plan for my 414" setup is to go with 1 7/8" headers, 3" Y-pipe, to 3.5" intermediate to a B&B catback. I will have a 3.5" cutout installed in the intermediate pipe before the axle. So, what it comes down to is, is there going to be any benifit to going to a merge collector over a normal collector?

I am really on the fence with this one!

If I was to go with a single cut out, I would go with the merge collector because it will out flow just plain old putting two pipes together. Now if you ran dual cut outs, I really wouldnt matter what kind of merge that I had because the exhaust gas wouldnt even make it there.
BTW. from the looks of it that new set up is gona be sweet. <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" />

Thanks for the comments on the new setup.

Let me make my question more clear, Will using merge collectors at the header point not the Y.

Just to clear that up...

Depends on how much power/torque they will be worth. On a 346" motor I don't see merged collectors being worth that much. I know I won't be paying $300 for Dynatech's collectors when I can get a good PAIR of Hooker collectors for $75.
How much power do you think the merged collectors will get you with your 414" motor?

Louis pointed you in the right direction here:

https://ls1tech.com/ubb/cgi-bin/ulti...;f=24;t=006138

If I was spending the dough on a big inch motor I wouldn't hold back. Do it once, do it right, and enjoy it. Of course, this is a better corner to cut than say scrimping in the bottom end.

Mike:
I am a cheap bastard and appreciate economy issues, but you are comparing apples to oranges. Whether the gain seen with a well designed merge collector over a standard collector is worth the added expense is a different question. The cost isn't a function of gains realized, it's a function of production costs which are most definitely higher.

I've been wondering the same thing. I've been looking through some old magazines, trying to find some info on this.

I think that it's probably more involved than just bolting it up & go. You would have to experiment with going longer or shorter on the collector. This would shift the power throughout the powerband. You just need to experiment to find the optimum for your car. I'm sure there would be some benifit to just bolting it up, but to optimize it, you would have to do as I have described.

Before owning the QTP headers i ran a set of Dynatech stepped headers with the high flow merge collectors anticipating to build a larger ci motor. i read and read on the subject to see if i could justify spending the extra 536 for the
1 7/8" > 3" high flow merge collectors, which came at 268 a pop. in the end i figured it was all or none and spending that kind of money for my eventual built motor and to essentially suffocate it because i could not utilize the terminal pulsing/scavenging effect created by their higher velocity. i chumped it up and man they were sweet and worth it, just until i could not take the continual leaks between the collectors and the primaries. now the QTPs take their proud place and run into a mufflex 3" y-pipe to a 3.5" I-pipe into the borla.

Ryan,
Have you considered contacting Burns regarding the merge collectors, etc? They should be able to design you a nice system.
