Loud Whining On Warm Start
Loud Whining On Warm Start On warm startups I sometimes have a very loud whine from under the hood, after 30-90 seconds it'll stop and I hear a small release in pressure. It sounds like some type of air pump but I really don't know why it would only be on during warm starts. The sound will remain when driving unless I'm engine braking then it just cuts and comes back when I clutch in/accelerate.
Also I'll be pulling my valve covers soon to check my pushrods (almost positive I have 1-2 bent). Just pull the coilpacks, valvecovers, unbolt rockers and pull them out?

maybe it is the air pump (emissions pump) going out on your car? you could try unplugging it, and then see if the sound goes away. you might throw an ses code, but those are easy to reset.

You're correct on pulling the stuff apart. Put the rockers back on and torque to 22ft-lbs, rotate crank over a bit and re-check.

My car does the same thing once in a while. I thought it was the air pump too. It's been doing it for a couple of years so I'm not too worried about it. I can actually hear it through the exhaust at the back of the car too. Then that little pressure release sound and it goes away.

Well, to eliminate the air pump you can just pull the fuse to disable it. It'll throw P0412 but go back off by itself after a few starts.

Hey, I had the same problem. Every now and then upon cold start up it would whine and after a hot minute it would quit. Sometimes it would even happen while I was driving and came to a stop. IT DROVE ME NUTS!!! Moved on to installin LT's so at the same time I took out the A.I.R pump and never had this problem again. When it happened it almost sounded like my power steering was going bad, but turned out it was that stupid pump. Good luck!
P.S if the whining sound goes away when you slightly hit the throttle then you have the same problem I had to the point!!
I have that same whine during cold starts, but I haven't had the air pump in the car for over two years now. This just recently started happening. What I have noticed is when this starts happening if I hit the throttle the noise will go away and as the rpm comes back down the noise will come back. Is it possible that the alternator is making this noise.

Mine started doing it after the NW 90mm and FAST went on, no AIR pump here either.
