Default Diagnose THIS problem, exhaust ringing/vibration at the y-pipe

Ok, i'm going to try and explain this the best i can. Ok I start the car up and poke my head under the pass. side to find the noise. It usually starts about 1 minute after startup. Ok so i'm listening and theres a noise that sounds electrical and it shuts off (sounds like an air release valve letting out air) and that's when the vibration/ringing starts. You can see the y-pipe vibrating in unison with the noise. Now I just need to no what it is. All my clamps are tightened behind the cats. Keep in mind it didn't do this when I bought it in November 05' and it's gotten progressively worse to where it's almost constant, and it's running stock manifolds/y-pipe with a magnaflow catback

there are heat shields all over the place. get under the car and start smackin the pipes around to see if you can reproduce the sound, then you can try to pinpoint where its coming from.

The heat shields will be silver pieces of metal screwed to the bottom of the body. They have RAZOR sharp corners and just love to cut your arms/hands to shreds.

Yeah. Be careful. I would suggest getting the vehicle in the air, SAFELY, and bang on the headers and y-pipe where it sounds like the noise is coming from. Since it sounds like you hear it on the passenger' s side, I would look about where the collector is, where it gets close to the floor. To get good ground clearance, headers get stuffed pretty high in this area and sometimes close enough to just barely rub on the heat shields. You may also be hearing the metal retaining sleeve, that goes around the O2 sensor wires, rattling or buzzing. Mine do that. Just try checking in those areas and you will likely find something.

Save your hands, get a rubber mallet to do all the banging.

Ok I banged on it with a mallet and the noise seems to be coming from the clamp right after the cat on the pass. side. But everything seems tight. Suggestions?

Cram a **** load of steel wool where the problem area is and stick a band-clamp around it.

Do you mean around the clamp or a spot on the pipe itself?

Does it has a ball/socket style clamp right there? Are you POSITIVE It's not the heat shield above the cat?

I wasn't being totally serious about the steel wool and clamp, but it might actually work to help stop the noise.

I wasn't able to get the car up to check. Can I get to it from under the hood?

im having the same problem after installing long tubes and catback. on some areas under the car i jammed a piece of garden hose in between the floorboard and pipes to keep it rattling. now i have the problem i believe your talking about and i will be using a peice of garden hose as well. this is the heat shield under the passengerside where my long tube connects to the cat.
maybee the magnaflow i pipe is rattling against the floor to your vehicle?
