Default T-stat gone to hell? Temps reach 250+, can hear boiling

at idle Temps reach 250+, once I get it going she drops very little, then I come to a stop light and the needle is pinned. I pulled over right away and you could hear the fluid boiling!
Is it just a t-stat?

1) Don't drive the car anymore. the fact you overheated so much, be VERY cautious to check your oil regularly (for a "milky" look). Overheating causes warped heads, and leaking head gaskets. They need to be taken off and milled to fix.

2) Yes, it is likely the t-stat or you had a leak and no longer have any fluid in the radiator, or your water pump crapped out. The fact that you're hearing noise might be the pump bearings.....

I would check fluid, then replace the thermostat (might as well go with a 160*), then make sure the fans are coming on (might do this first), then replace the water pump (perfect time to get an electric one ).

if your low on fluid youre fuel will shut off and youre car will turn off,im having problems too with the ac on the car will overheat and both fans turn on and i have the 160 stat,i think the stat is always open and the water in the radiator does not cool down fans are programmed to turn on at 160
