Default Using Cold Welds on Exhaust...

Is it safe to use cold weld epoxys (JB Weld and Quick Steel) on exhaust manifolds (headers). I have a friend with a hole in his passenger manifold and its a tough spot to weld while there installed so I figured I could just use the epoxy to cold weld it. Do these epoxys withstand the header temps or will they just last temporarily. What steps should I take if it will work and what is the best way to get a strong cold weld? Thanks a ton in advance...Josh.

i dont know but a freind of mine had a cracked radiator and he used cold weld to repair it and even though the car overheated (car had problems) half a dozen times the cold weld never let go or leaked.
i know a radiator doesnt get as hot as an eghaust manifold but it might work then again it might not because of expansion and contraction rates between the two could be to great and might just pop the cold weld right off.

Thanks for the response. That sounds like it has some sense in it. Does anyone know of any type of epoxy designed for exhaust or sealer of some kind?

I believe that JB weld is only good up to 500 degrees, my boss used some to fix an exhaust leak on his car and it just crumbled after a few days.

Damn...this leak is fixable but the passenger header has to be removed if I want it welded Im almost positive. Im gonna swing by my muffler shop tomorrow and if they say I have to take the header off then I guess its time for full exhaust . Now the thing is...I gotta save up!!! If anyone knows of any other way I can take care of this with a sealer or epoxy please post up experience...Josh.

do you have headers or the original manifolds?
i thought you arnt supposed to weld cracked manifols because they will just crack again.
if you have to remove the manifold to have it welded why not just buy a used manifols off someone here and install it and save on the welding alltogether.

There are several types of JB Weld.

I used the regular stuff on a BBQ lid that had an hinge broken off when the wind blew it over. It let go the first time it heated up. Melted like thick wax.

I wouldn't think the stuff would work on an exhaust manifold.

yeah even the "industrial strength JB weld" is only good to 500* dont use it on manifolds, they carry double that heat.
