Not sure if a 160 stat would hurt the motor but I was told by the guy who tuned my car that it was a useless mod and he just reprogrammed the fans.

it's not going to necessarily "hurt" the motor. a 160* t-stat isn't going to grenade your motor like a 300 shot of nitrous. what it will do is make it dirtier than it should be, cut your fuel mpg, raise your emissions, add little if any performance and take time off your engine's life by keeping it dirtier than it should inside. for a stock motor, it's a bad idea. if you're a track car running nitrous or a high psi forced induction setup with extra cold spark plugs, then you have to run one - with a proper tune of course. but for a stock daily driver with the occasional track run, it's a more harmful than beneficial mod.

Alright. I have said nothing to enter the argument regarding the T-Stat. YOU know NOTHING about my thoughts, knowledge or opinions, and have no grounds to make a statement about me. I have read DOZENS of your posts where your omniscient power guides the "ignorant" to chaco taco nirvana. If you're such an expert, and if anyone can turn wrenches, why do you have only rims, which probably were purchased with the car, an slp lid, that even if you did, takes but five minutes (oh and no wrenches involved, perfect for you) and a catback that I'll take the liberty in assuming wasnt done by you. Oh and the best part, you advertise the fact that you have stock gears, man that's awesome, truly something to brag about! The fact is you need to stop boasting this wealth of knowledge that you have gathered from hundreds of questionable sources over the past 20 years of your life. My arguement with you is not over the T-Stat, but with you. You need to stop believing that you know all there is to know, and that you OPINIONS are true and better than all elses. I hate to tell you this, but one day espeically if this trait of yours carries into your everyday life, reality is going to slap you in the face, and boy, is it going to hurt.

probably because i'm a college student, make $16/hour, spent 12 grand on my car just a few months ago, owe 8 grand for tutition and simply can't afford any other mods, especially since my weekly commute to work alone is 400 miles and gas costs me nearly $100/week. i'd have to say massive debt has something to do with it, wouldn't you?

i never said i'm an 'expert'. i just understand engines today are designed to run differently than engines designed 40 years ago, and i accept that. you think i wouldn't want to go back to the days where cars had 400 stock horsepower, gas was 30 cents a gallon and there were no emissions laws? ****, i'd be in heaven! stop being so stubborn and just admit times are changing. it ain't the 50's anymore old man, the hippies have changed everything

Choco this is in general with any motor.......when enough water (water as in H2O, not just coolant) gets into the crankcase/oiling system while the motor is runnin, will mix/form a suspension whatever you want to call it and give the oil a milky appearance...what many call a milkshake....

do you agree on this?

Wasn't it you that just a couple of day's ago was bragging about depositing a $1900 paycheck? I'm sure someone can get a link to that, hurry up though if he edit's or deletes it. not unless your working 10 hour shifts full time... your weekly income comes out to: 16*8*5=$640, before taxes. even if you were payed biweekly thats only $1280. far below your $1900 mark. Seems ironic that someone who would brag about a large paycheck would suddenly complay about poor finances.

edit: corrected the math for a work week, even less. Sorry guys.

Tell me specifically how it cuts your fuel mileage on these cars?

Choco may be a pita sometimes but I don't see what the personal attacks have to do with the issue at hand.

it all went to tuition and school supplies. i just had to buy a desk, office chair and a weight bench for my new apartment...which is gonna be $550 plus utilities and expenses (food, water, heat, light)

i have $39 in my wallet

because engines are more efficient when hot. they combust better, get better fuel economy and give off less emissions since fuel is burned more completely. plus, molecules have more energy when they're hotter.

it's defensiveness. i have some scientific facts while they have info from the july 1963 issue of hot rod magazine. i try not to be hostile because honestly, it's not necessary and only makes you sound immature.

I'm also curious as to why. And, if it does what can be done to minimize the mileage loss?

actually, if you want better mpg, you can raise the t-stat to make it run even hotter
but i'd advise against that. too much heat is just as bad as not enough. anyway, for best mpg, just run the stock t-stat, make sure your cats are clean (or even better, run no cats for even better mpg), run the most free-flowing exhaust on the market, an aftermarket lid, CIA, higher gear ratios (like 2.73's and 3.08's), headers, aftermarket tunes...these all boost your mpg significantly. one of the biggest mpg gains can be seen with an underdrive pulley and an electric water pump.

shoot, even turbos and a set of heads can boost your mpg. people lose mpg due to their driving style. a cam and low gears (3.73's, 4.10's) will seriously cut your mpg though
