Default 1 3/4" vs. 17/8" primaries???

So I'm getting a set of headers for my car and a custom TD set-up done in full stainless with Magnaflow bullets.

The headers will have no EGR or AIR fitting
It'll go 3" into an X-pipe and then go down to 2.5" after the X, and over the axel and out the back.

The set-up is being done by a VERY well respected shop here on Long Island who does some very badass work...I can't wait!
It'll be flawless and I'll be sure to get some pics up as soon as it's done.

My question is...
I'm torn between 1 3/4" and 1 7/8" primaries.
Right now the car is entirely bone stock...
The car will eventually get an ATI D1SC supercharger set-up and put down some serious power. But that won't be till immediately. After speaking with the builder, he highly recommends the 1 7/8" if I have any plan on blowing the car.

Let's say I change my mind and decide to go n/a...how would the 1 7/8" primaries fair my set-up?

I think if you plan on going with a blower or a built motor, you will benifit from the larger primaries. If you only planned on bolt-ons then the 1 7/8" would be overkill.

Awww... I found the LT1 fanboy.

No one has mentioned 1 3/4 to 1 7/8 stepped... might be the best of both worlds. I myself have considered the change from my current 1 3/4 headers for step headers. My car is mainly a street car, that said... most people I have dealt with while buying parts for my new set up have said to just keep the 1 3/4's. They liked the smaller primary headers for the extra low end TQ in the RPM range that the car will see most often.

I have seen LSx motors as well as others put down in excess of 800+ RWHP on 1 3/4 headers. Look in the last few issues of Engine Masters and you will see some of these guys are making huge HP with 1 3/4 headers that are beat to hell. The reason why most people get 1 7/8 is becasue they think bigger is better and they can tell everyone they have 1 7/8" headers. I myself let the results speak for themselves. If I had to choose another system for my Z it would be the Melrose 1 3/4 headers.........the same ones I'm running now. peace!

Even if you had double the power my car makes, which you don't... you're still a non-driving M'fer. So no worries there for me.

Back on topic... from looking at some local cars, a few switched to the 1 7/8, and picked up some at peak, but didn't gian much - if any under the curve.

unless you are going bigger cubed forced induction i would stick with the 1 3/4's. you will lose some of the lower end with the 1 7/8's. i put 1 7/8's on myn with stock cube just because i knew i was going bigger and didn't want to buy new ones later.

How about having a Trex cam w/ a maximum of 150 shot of Nitrous. Would the hooker 1 7/8 Super Com headers do the trick. Currently have the pacesetter 1 3/4 but when u really look at them they step inward like if the would become 1 5/8.
