KHS,

Please can you elaborate:
how much should the pulley be pulled out...?
this is so the belt rides on it correctly, right...?
do you just use a large puller (jaws on pulley edges, long thread on pulley center)...?
got any pics of the LS2/LS1 pumps side-by-side...?

I called a few dealers and they all gave my the part number below for a 2000 LS1 - this is also the part number in the parts section in the general help. Does anyone know if this requires the old style thermostat (includes inlet), and does the pulley need to be pulled out? Thanks!

did yall ever find out if this is the ls2 waterpump and if its already modified for an ls1 or you have to pull out the pully 3/8"??? Also, if it is the ls2, does that mean you have to get a new thermostat?

*89017593
PUMP KIT
$163.85

I just received my "pump kit" from GMpartsdirect and it had the thermostat bolted on and the two gaskets that bolt to the block. The part number on the box however is 89018053. Does anyone know if this is the LS2 or LS6 pump? I was going to call the local GM parts dept, but they're closed already. Thanks!

Ok, I just found this link: http://paceperformance.com/index.asp...D&ProdID=96975

It looks like 89018053 is the part that replaces 89017593, and this pump fits LS1, LS2 and LS6. I'm going to install next weekend, so I guess I'll see if it's a direct fit without modifying anything.

damn, this is a mess, no one knows what's what! Is the thermostat on an ls2 different than an ls1? maybe you'll find your answer that way

The LS1 thermostat is clipped/twisted/snapped into the hose housing and these two are one unit.
The LS2 thermostat is separate from the hose housing, and so is cheaper.

The two are not interchangeable because the water pumps are different...

Also, the LS2 pump has a different flat-style pulley (which must be pulled out a little to work on a LS1)...

I remember seeing that there is one year model LS2 pump that has the old domed-style LS1 pulley...
I would like the part #, but I can't find that post anymore or I'm just losing my mind...

The 89018053 I received has the dome styled pulley and the thermostat is molded into the inlet as one unit, so it sounds like this is the LS1 pump. I wonder why Pace Performance states it'll fit on the LS2 and LS6?

I spoke to a local dealer and they confirmed that 89018053 is the new LS1 water pump kit. Also, GMpartsdirect confirmed as well:

"89017593, has been replaced by part number 89018053. 89018053 is correct for your vehicle's water pump, per the information supplied.

Thank you for choosing www.GmPartsDirect.com"

I installed the 89018053 with the supplied thermostat, and everything seems to work/fit fine. The one thing I noticed on the thermostat though is that the little hole in the casting that accepts a wire harness fastener does not exist on the 89018053, so my wire is dangling - it's the wire that goes in between the heater hoses. I don't think this will cause any problems, but I don't like the idea of it dangling. I'll need to fasten somewhere somehow....

I instaled a dealer pump and the dang T-stat was stuck closed. I couldn't use the old one as they are made differently. I had to have the car running so I had no choice but to cut the guts out of the T-stat. GM doesn't sell just the T-stat by itself and the warranty is for the whole pump assembly so to get it replaced under warranty I'd have to pull the whole pump off again.

I suggest you get a Mezeire electric water pump. I run one with an underdrive and a 160 thermostat. You notice the sound of the pump at idle. It is a great improvement to the cooling system. However it is not cheap.

Who the hell told you that? Thats straight BS, as a matter of fact the electric pump is better for a daily driver since it will pump the same amount of water whether its at idle or cruising down the highway.

I'm running a Autozone pump right now, don't remember how much I paid for it though. I've onl had it on for maybe 2000 miles, and it's working fine, no noise coming from it. Plus when this one takes a dump I'll be able to get a replacement for free.

Evans Hi Flow

Might as well put something in there that will cool better due to higher, more balanced flow. The Evans pump can be run just fine with Dexcool - did it for 2 years. Then I switched over to the Evans NPG-R Waterless coolant - temps even better!

it will pump the same amount of water whether its at idle or cruising down the highway.
And yes, an electric pump will flow the same rate whether at idle or cruise - problem is, the flow is not high enough at idle conditions (not as high as mechanical pump flow at idle) when you really need it. Flow rate becomes not as important when you are cruising.

Not sure where you are getting this information from...after firing my car up last night with the EWP for the first time and watching inside the radiator neck where the coolant comes in from the heads, I can tell you that without a doubt, the EWP flows way more coolant at idle than the mechanical pump it replaced.
