Default Best Waterpump: GM vs. Napa vs. Autozone vs. Advance vs. Other

well, my water pump is leaking. what a joyous occassion i'm now searching to buy one for my car. it's a very small drip, but i'd like to get it replaced before it pukes everywhere. i'd like to know what water pumps you guys have had the best luck with, a GM OEM pump, a pump from autozone, advance auto, napa, or anywhere else. note that money is NOT an issue - i can get all these pumps within $10 of each other so i'm not worried about the additional few dollars. also note that i do not want an electric water pump. this is not an option to me. they're far too expensive, don't last very long, are added strain on my electrical system where i already run a sub and an amp and it's just not worth the hassel for a lousy ~10 horsepower.

lemme know what you guys like. i want the best water pump for longevity. i don't care about warranties or anything other than the basic 1 year or so. the longest warranty is useless to me if i have to replace the thing every 5,000 miles

GM OEM of course but I hope you like paying "CASH-O-RAMA"

normally autoparts stores will have GM OEM parts though (just in their name)

I bought a brand new GM-OEM waterpump from a GM parts dealer off of E-Bay a few months back. It came with the good AC Delco gaskets, a warranty, and I received it just a few days after winning the auction. PM me if you want a link to one of their auctions.

well, according to the sticky in the general information section, the GM part number for the water pump is as follows:

LS1/LS6 water pump (now same as LS2) (98-02) (AC-D #251-690) = 89017593 (f. 12458934)

if you put "89017593" in on gmpartsdirect, you get a "waterpump pump kit" for $163. Napa sells theirs for $160, so that's no big difference in my book.

money wasn't an issue regarding the choices on the poll as they were roughly the same price. they're all around $160. if you're bringing in a ~500 dollar pump...can't handle that right now

I work at napa so i might be partical, but the as long as you get a NEW napa pump i can bet you it will be an original GM unit. Make sure the pump your getting is a DPW unit from napa. The only other pump i would get after market would be a NEW airtex unit. The only reason i would stay away from an autozone pump is because they take any pump from any company and throw it in there box, so you can never tell what brand pump your gonna get.

i would stick with gm, but if you do go aftermarket make sure you get a new pump not rebuilt.

I dunno...I haven't gone through enough yet to know which is the best. I hope I never do!

But, I got my waterpump at Advanced Auto a couple of weeks ago and it still works...

There's also another part # 88894345 on gmpartsdirect.com.

It is like $25 cheaper than the other one. I don't see much of a difference, but maybe it is just the pump and not the entire kit.

the part i put in, i think it says it's the LS2 style pump. i guess that means it's a slight upgrade? i dunno, i just used the number from the general maintenance and repair section on here. for an extra $25, if the LS2 style is better, i'll go for it (assuming it's a direct swap, no modifications needed). it's spending an extra $200 that i'm against

i think the ls2 pump spins slightly slower making less cavitation , depending on who the ls2 is a better pump.it will fit an ls1 you just have to pull the pulley out a bit.
like i stated earlier it is cheaper.. GL on you choice

I like anything airtex uses. I am not a big fan of napa waterpumps and would never do an autozone type store pump. The gm one would also be a good bet.
