Default Uncoated Headers?

I've noticed the engine bay is a little warmer than usual. What are the benefits if any of header wrap? Worth it to do? How much $? Can you wrap the headers if they are already on the car?

coating more so than header wrap allows for cooler operating temp and longer life of headers, also look a lil better

Don't use header wrap. I wouldn't at least - it can easily become a fire hazard (case in point: Tom Byrne's car (ex-car).)

Coating doesn't even seem to help down here... I've seen two cars with coated FLP's and they had developed some rust on them... I'd be quite pissed for all that $$$.

What type of coating would you guys recommend on stainless headers? I have spoken to HPC here in Australia & they seem to know what they are doing but was wondering about your experience. Also, is it worthwhile coating the inside of the stainless headers as well to reduce temp further & maybe smooth the flow?

Thanks

There is a company in Charlotte ( http://www.airborncoatings.com/customer/index3.html ) that can ceramic coat full length headers inside and out for about $205. Is this a good price? Is ceramic coating going overboard?

Hey there. Yeah, a company close by would be nice. I'm just not sure how much I want to spend on coating when I get my MACs (a long time from now). I can get them Jet-Hot coated, ceramic coated, or get the coating that MAC offers. I don't know the advantages/disadantages of each. Anyone?

Hi Jeff

Probably reasonable, plus if there was a problem with the coating they would be close by to take care of it. I think there is also another company in the Charlotte area. MORE uses one of them from time to time.

The coating MAC has on their headers equates to some high temp paint, doesn't really do much IMHO. I would suggest a Ceramic coat, the header wrap also tends to hold moisture in on a cooldown causing rust, when it's not being a fire hazard like ChrisB mentioned.

FWIW, I ran a set of uncoated Mac's on my car for over 10K. I had a 160 stat, and HPP3 fan tuning. With that my car ran cooler than ever. I never saw temps over 185 even sitting in traffic in Hotlanta heat(100+). As long as you mod your cooling system to these specs, and keep your fans running than you should have no problems with heat.

Also, my Mac's had ZERO rust on them or the y-pipe after being driven in the rain and several washes in the engine bay.

I tend to like the idea of sort form of coating...did BlackJack headers with their coating on my 72 Vette back in 1984. The BlackJacks were about on pair with MAC as far as quality goes. The headers have held up and not rusted out after 17 years, which I think is pretty decent.

Josh,
I was thinking more long term, like 10 to 15 years.
