The dark crap all over the rear of the blade? Is that normal or is it rust or something? Would you put it on your car?

Where'd you find that turd ? J/K Aluminum doesn't rust so I'm sure it's just oil and carbon grime on there. I would just clean it off with some 400 grit sandpaper or something and you'll be fine.

Looks like a baked on oil film complements of your PCV system. If I'm not mistaken, almost the entire throttle body is aluminum, so it really won't rust (might corrode, but not rust).

Our PCV systems tend to spew quite a bit of oil from the crankcase, and it goes right in behind your throttle body (which is why it tends to get on the back of the blade and not the front)...if you'll look in your manifold, I'm sure you'll see a decent oil residue all over.

A catch can can drastically reduce the amount that gets by, but even then, some will still get on the back of the TB. A good cleaner will take it right off though.

Ah it's not mine but was thinking of buying it so I can still drive the car when I send my original off for porting.

Get a Shaner, he will charge you a core charge but will send you a ported one and then you just send back your stock and he will credit back the money.

I had thought of that but then it wouldn't be my original. How do I know it's not a gussied up piece from a junkyard? I know that's where yours came from and I was looking at the S3 but I'm really not sure about getting back something other than my own piece. Plus, core charge is annoying to me as a customer. I understand the reasoning though.

Most of the time when you send your TB in you don't get your exact TB back.
With Shaner it may work differently because he is a smaller business.

It asks to specify what year car it is 98-99 or 00-02 but again that's another reason I want my original done.

Actually the one we got back was in better shape than our original and Mark stands behind his stuff, any problems and he will fix or replace it.

Besides if you really are paranoid about it, how do you know you will get back your original back if you ship it out? Maybe they mess it up and send you a replacement piece? If it works it works...

Precisely... The only way you will know you are getting your original back is if you do it yourself...

It asks if it's '98-'99 or '00-'02 b/c the 2 different year ranges use different throttle cable brackets (the piece that's attached to the shaft of the TB). Anyways, if you don't want to do a core charge you can get a good ported and polished one on ebay and not worry about it. They usually go for around $120. That way if you don't like it you can always sell it. I wouldn't be worried about keeping your original.

I know I thought about that as well. I'll have to engrave my initials on it!

Either way, the car would be drivable if I had a spare TB.

Yeah but then you will probably be spending more money in the long run than just paying a core charge. Not to mention you will have to change the TB twice instead of once... Just trying to save you a headache...

Here's an example of one I found on ebay just now:

The only difference is that Shaner fills in the IAC hole so there's less turbulence there but then again this one has the TB blade shaft halved so there's less obstruction in the direct air path. If you got one off ebay you could always sell your stocker for $40 or $50 (whatever they go for) and then you're out a total of about 1/2 of what the Shaner costs. That's how I would go about it but that's just IMO.
