What do you mean by the "first oil change"? The first one you have done to it or? Well, a lot of people here including myself, run the German Castrol 0W-30. Others run the mobil 1. Its really going to be up to you as to what you want in there. And who knows what is already in there.....

I don't think it makes a difference when you switch to synthetic, but if you were running regular before, just change it with regular, unless you are ready to commit to changing it out with synthetic for the life of the car.

For synthetic Germal Castrol is the best, along with Mobil 1 0w40.

we put synthetic oil in our 98 V6 Camaro by accident.

driving it and oil pressure dropped to 0. turned it off.. couldnt figure out what it was, ended up draining out the oil and it came out like cambels chunky soup. had to end up taking off the oil pan and cleaning out the pickup tube and oil pan. the synthetic ended up grabbing everything that was in the lifters and running it though the whole motor.

normal Valvoline 5w30 is all you need

that's because your engine was so gunked up from regular conventional oil, the synthetic oil cleaned it all out. your engine was a crusty mess inside until you put synthetic in.

you know you have some kind of fluke. you're the only guy on ls1tech whose motor is quieter on mobil 1 5W-30 than GC 0W-30. mobil 1 5W-30's junk. for some reason, your motor's clearances must be off or something, perhaps tighter than they're supposed to be. GM endorses mobil 1 5W-30. they get paid to do it. it ain't because it's the best oil by any means. even if your engine is noisier on GC, i bet if you did an oil analysis on both m1 5W-30 and GC 0W-30, your engine would wear twice as much with mobil 1.

why do u guys think that u cant use synthetic after using conventional the entire time, technically oil is oil, u can switch from synthetic to conventional to higher mileage all u want. if anyone argues with me i work at jiffy lube and have to answer these questions everyday. the only difference is that there are more additives in the synthetic. but actually for a higher mileage car synthetic is a waste of money, just put the higher mileage from pennzoil in it and it gurantees performence.

yes, and it ran fine before. if you switch to synthetic after running certian dinos you have the potential for ruined motor. you should pick to run regular or synthetic and then stick with it.

OK, I am new to the LS1 game. Where do you get GC 0w-30? Is it the same Castrol GTX stuff in the store? Why a 0w and not a 5w? I am in SE ohio and the climate is 35 degrees right now. Any difference in that?

ahhhhhhh Anthony, i am not the only one lol.. there was another guy that had the same damn problem. he was running M1 5W30, he switched to GC 0W30 he said his car was loud ticking like crazy. he switched back no prolbmes.... See i am not the only one

BTW let me rephrase that. the GM Manual call for 5W30...
