symptoms of faulty cats??

If it's clogged the car will stumble and run like ***, and may develop exhaust leaks around the header and collector gaskets, or AIR/EGR if you still have 'em.
Most muffler shops can do a pressure test to see if there's PSI building up in front of the cats.
When my stock ones went I had bad rattling noise and little silver flakes in the exhaust that glittered in the sunlight.

GM has always replaced them free under the federal emissions warranty for 8yrs/80K - the letter is not a "recall" they just acknowledge the issue and extend the warranty on the 00-02 F cars. Haven't gotten mine yet but read it on line - third paragraph starts with "This is not a recall" in bold letters. Good deal if you're still running stock cats.

Yeah, I've got the same letter... I had my d.s. replaced at about 50,000. All it does is extend the service on them from 80k miles to 120k or 10 yrs from when the car was put in service. I wouldn't waste my time taking it in unless the codes mentioned above have shown up, b/c they'll probably just turn you around... Don't worry though one of them will go bad eventually, just keep that in a file for your records, I have heard of people getting screwed by the dealers under 80k having to pay for this not knowing that they should of been replaced for FREE!
