The muffler, is the only difference, the LM2 has packing in it, the LM1 does not.

Nope, its like he said, the only difference is the inside of the muffler. 1 has absolutely nothing in the "muffler", it is just a larger diameter peice of pipe really. 2 has baffles around the outer diameter of the inside of the muffler, but you can still see straight through it.

HHHmmmmm......now that I think about it, you may be able to tell by looking at the outside of the muffler to see if there are any heat spots from where the baffles were welded into the LM2. I have the 2 on mine, and I would go outside and look at it to check, but I am in Iraq.

i think the only LM2 you can get has the slp logo on the muffler and is designed to be clamped on.

the original LM1 had the pipe welded on and looked like this:

the new LM1 & LM2 systems have a shiny clamped on muffler, so if you see a muffler that loooks like the above picture, it's the LM1 as i dont think LM2 was ever offered like that

here is the new system:

if you see the above, then i guess you wont be able to tell which it is until it is off the car and then you can just look inside. if you see a pipe inside the muffler with a bunch of holes in it, its LM2

thanks!

Excellent explanation jimmy.
I was planning on posting the same pics when I was reading the first post.
I will simply add to this, ...

If it's simply a hollow open tube in the center expanded section, it's the later version of the new modular LMI. The LMII has a perforated core in it as mentioned above.
