I have both my Formula and a '98 Mustang GT. The GF liked the GT a lot, so we bought it for her. It's never going to be as quick as the 'Bird, but it's a decent car. We've actually been able to mod it pretty cheaply since I watch eBay for deals. So far we've done an off road H-pipe, O2 sims, CAI, ported plenum, 75mm TB, steeda timing adjuster and a PI intake all for about $500. Probably will only run 14.7's with all that though, lol. Next mods are 4.10's and a 3800 stall.

I bet you could sweet talk them into a set of TSP duals with no mufflers, and they would cut you a nice price on them. The mufflers come with clamps to stick them on with, they aren't welded when you buy the system. It would be easy for a guy to take the mufflers out of the box and cut $75 or so off the price.

Here's my unsolicited opinion: Since you are basically saying that you like the looks of the Mustang more and that is the overriding reason to purchase a new vehicle, then get the car you want. If you are looking for performance, then an LS1 is going to be much better and have more potential down the road.

Now, you have talked about not being able to afford a Cobra or Mach 1. OK, but in order to bring the performance of a 2V 4.6 up to LS1 or Cobra levels, you're going to need to mod the Mustang. That's the problem I'm seeing. The performance parts for a 2V Mustang aren't cheap. Headers, Cams, tuning, gears, supercharger (?), cold air kits, etc. will all start to add up. What I would suggest, is to find a car that meets the looks of what you want, is available with an automatic, and has the performance to start of with to be fun, but also has the potential for greater power. I suggest a used 2003-2004 Mach 1. If you really can only afford a $9,000 car, then you probably don't have extra money to be buying parts to mod, either. So, if $9,000 is the limit, stick to either performance (LS1 Camaro/Trans Am) or looks (1999-2004 Mustang GT).

Also, FWIW, I have a 2001 WS6 Tran Am. It's my daily ride and I love it. It's comfortable, sounds great, hauls ***, and still gets 22 MPG thru the week. Today I drove my wife's 2000 Mustang GT to work (mainly because I was on E in the bird). Her car has Bassani headers, X-pipe, and catback, a C&L Plenum, and cold air kit. It sounds killer and looks nice, but the seats suck and I've only been able to run a best time of 13.50@103mph. She wants Crower stage 2's, but they're $600 just for the cams!

Good luck!!

Just my experience. I had a 97 Cobra (4V) I give that car credit. The motor was cool as hell, looked bad-a$$ when you opened the hood. The fit and finish was very nice. Paint was great. The downsides to that car were the interior was kind of cramped, and the 4.6 is not exaclty a torque monster. I had basic bolt-ons - long tubes, full exhaust, intake parts, 3.73's. Also, the 5-speed was a drawback. I now have a '00 Z28. The LS1 is a monster, plain and simple. It's WAY easier to work on. (push-rods might be old school, but its a lot easier to work on than 4 cams and 3 timing chains). The fit and finish is not as nice, I don't care for the quality of the paint mostly. I find it to be much more comfortable to drive. There is just more room in the front seats. I love the 6-speed. And the extra displacement (5.7 over 4.6) is noticable. You can feel the torque. To make a long story short, I love my LS1 and I wouldn't go back to the Stang.

But anyways, here is some advice.

-------
5spd - definately get 4.10s. 3.73 really isn't that much stepup from stock 3.27.

long tubes - are a bitch to install, either lift the motor or drop the k-member.

magnapack w/ offroad pipe - I had this on my 2004 GT and it sounded like a 1988 Chevy truck with straight pipes

heads/cams - around $2000 + tuning and you will see around 300-310rwhp (in a 5spd car)
ur talking about a mustang right? cuz i hope everyone got that out of what u said.
