Default Controversy of Free ram air..

Did a search and saw no debatable thread.

I see people flip flopping around on the subject of the Free ram air mod.

my car already had it cut out and i just added the K&N. Is it benifitial or harmful to the car?

I notice 2-3 mph speed increase at the track after doing my FRAM. I've been using it for over 20,000 miles now and so far no ill effects other then a pretty dirt K&N filter.

Won't hurt anything unless you remove the filter and drive daily without it.

The issue is what happens to your IATs especially sitting
at idle, and you guys with stock fan settings are really in
a bad situation. No radiator airflow through, but rising heat
off its face goes, uhh, where? Right. Heat up your IAT and
then launch, you've probably lost 5 degrees of timing. It
will come around, somewhere down the road, to a more
reasonable value. Great if you only care about "later" and
not "now!".

There is no significant "ram" effect by the way. Not even
1PSI is built up in front of the radiator. If there were, you
would be pushing against 500lb of drag. You're not. It isn't.

the baffle is there to cool the car while its moving not while its settin still.doing this just lets cool air into the air box it doesnt hurt anything.if its bad why does everyone do it.no ram air really works unless you are doin 200 mph.the iac only reads at certan temps anyway.and does nothing to timing its main purpose is too richen fuel on cold starts.

with or without this modification, you will still get hot air. what it is doing is allowing more air in. just have somebody adjust the fans.

hmm what most people dont realize....when the car is actually moving...your not getting hot air in, and your engine bay is actually ALOT cooler because of the moving air....its when you sit still it kinda gets sucky.....hook up efi live and see what im talking about

that is why you do this mod and add a SSRA or Whisper cold air scoop

This might be a dumb question, but why not do the resistor mod to the IAT sensor at the same time so it's always reading "cooler"? As long as you run good gas in your car at all times, there should be no issues with knock. As far as I know, not many people are worried about the performance of their car sitting still, so higher temps at that point aren't really a big deal. As soon as the car hits 5 MPH, the entire mass of warmer air has been pushed from under the car and now you're back in business. I don't even have this mod done, but I can't see how it's detrimental to performance. I think I will get another lower airbox and do the mod to it, then once I hit the track I will do back to back testing. That should once and for all prove whether it's a worthwhile mod or not.

FRA works well for high speed road use as it taps into the cooler air being fed by the lower air dam. Without the FRA the airbox does not have access to this mod.

@ 120-140mph sprint it makes a noticable difference.

Where it's a downer is if you frequent the track or do a lot of stop light action, espcially if it's hot outside.

While stationary (can be some time at the track) the rad will heat soak the area, this means your off the line power may be less. Sure as you go down the track you IAT's will drop but whether it would be a sufficent enough gain to out weigh the loss at the beginning I'm not so sure.

Simple answer get a FTRA (Fast Toys Ram Air), this is mostly a cool air duct and will allow much lower IAT's at idle and lower speeds.

In the heat of summer I would think the heat radiating off the black top street would be as bad if not worse than that coming off the radiator?

I cut mine out and installed a sheet metal shield that just about eliminates the updraft from the radiator.

Some people need to learn that it is better to remain quiet and be assumed a fool than to open their mouth and remove all doubt. Learn how to tune before giving any more advice.
