Great info. Thanks to all. If I had a shop with a lift, which I don't, I think I would go out the bottom only because I am doing a motor and tranny swap. But, since I don't have those kind of tools at my disposal, I will take the extra time and go out the top. I am going to have to remove all the accesories off my old motor anyway to put on the new one. I would have to say personal preference has some bearing, but having the right tools plays a much bigger role.

If you have lift = out the bottom is easier, period.
If you have no lift = out the top because I'm not redneck enough to get my that high off the ground with a ratchet strap or a come-along winch wrapped around the branch of the shade tree in my backyard.

The few times my friends and i have done it cherry picker out the bottom. Lift the car off the motor and trans. And this was in a small garage too. No problems any time weve done it.

Where do you hook the chains to lift the body? Do you have to remove the front clip?

i pulled my lt1 with tranny from top. had some mounts fabbed up by my dad to bolt to exhaust ports where the headers bolt in and had some rings to put rods on to tilt the motor and tranny however needed. that was first time i ever pulled motor and wasnt that hard could have went by much faster if planned it out better but wastn bad at all

Out the bottom is the way I prefer. I just wrap a piece of chain around the core support and pick the front end up off the engine/trans.

Default Concerns - Engine out the Top

For a number of reasons, we are about to pull the engine on our 1999 WS6 out the top. The transmission is out and the heads, etc. are also removed. The concern is where to attach the chains/bolts so as to not damage the block.

Any thoughts and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Jim,

I've had mine on the hook several times using the four corner valley pan bolt holes with longer bolts and washers...

I used the TPIS ls1 motor plate. It uses the valley cover bolts to pull the motor out the top. It goes in place of the valley cover.

I decided to get the TPIS Plate as we will probably be doing this frequently. We are also putting LS's in two of our 2nd Gens ('72 Camaro & '70 Firebird).

Helped with a lift out the top a couple of weeks ago used the TPIS plate worked great.Just need the arm on the lift long enough to reach back and not be stopped by the bumper. Two people one to pull the lift forward and one to guide out. This was with no tranny on! Sorry for the late post
