AIR Removal with PICS!
It was so nice outside i figured it was time i took care of the damn AIR system on the car that drives me nuts. I hated the pump sound on start up and the popping when coming down from 4000rpm.
I didn't have much room to work as you can see.
The AIR pump is located behind the drivers side head lights. In order to get at it I had to take off the air dam and plastic shroud under the car. Once that was done i had all the room i needed. I unhooked the 2 electrical plugs and the one line that runs up to the top of the engine. Then took the 4 bolts out that held the AIR unit to the fuse box and it dropped right out.
(sorry i thought about documenting this AFTER i had pulled the unit out so all you get to see is the big open area it came from.)
Here is the the pump
As you can see, it isn't exactly small or lite.
Here is the hose that ran from the pump to the exhaust manifolds.
I unbolted the AIR pipes on both sides, and separated the drivers side from the T fitting so i could remove it.
Here is what you will need to buy to block off the holes in the manifolds.
I picked up the AIR/EGR block off plates from Speed Inc.
I reused the bolts and put the block off plates on. It would have been nice if they where thicker, but they seem to do the job.
Once i had the plates on the wireing taped up I decided it would be a good time to fire it up and see if i missed anything or if it leaked.
PRAISE THE LORD. No more damn whistle and pumping sounds on startup or idle! I let the vehicle run for a good 15 minutes to see if the block off plates stayed sealed after there was some heat to them. Everything is working and there are no service lights.
Here is everything i pulled off.
It was a hell of a lot easier then i thought it was going to be. The 98's are different then the 02's with the AIR system.
I was referencing this thread on LS1tech during my removal.

Hopefully this will help out others that are thinking of removing the AIR system.

Im not sure of the year but there is also an air solenoid i guess you could call it attached to the drivers side heads by the far back coil....i just did this on my 2000 along with egr and you will need to take that air thingy off from back there and plug up a small vaccum hose as well.

you shouldn't need to delete any codes for removing the air system as long as you don't pull the fuse for the system since that is how it checks for it...however with the egr you will throw a code immediatley after removal.

It doesn't throw codes, so rip the annoying crap out!
No problem guys!
Just thought that i would toss this up and help out anyone that was looking at doing it but not sure on where everything ran.
Its a really simple removal once you see were everything is running.

What about the small vaccum tube on the air connector
You forgot to say anything about the small vaccum line on the air connector on the driver side. Its need to be pluged with a small screw!
