Building True Duals: What are the QUIETEST mufflers?
Looking to build a true dual exhaust for my '98 WS6 after installing the MS4 it sounds restricted.
I live in a quiet association neighborhood and need to keep the exhaust at a reasonable level.
Currently I have a Magnaflow Cat-back which is pretty loud with the MS4 but not as loud as a Loudmouth.
I am planning to run 2.5" pipes, X-pipe and both pipes go over the r/s of the rear axle then split to both sides of the rear bumper.
To cut the noise, I was planning on installing either resonators/bullets before the axle and mufflers/bullets/resonators just before the tips (Mecham BTW).
I am right to say the quietest bullet or round muffler will still be louder than say a Dynomax Super Turbo/UltraFlo?
Trying to build something quiet(er) but not sacrifice power.
Any and all suggestions greatly apreciated.
BTW, I am trying to keep as much ground clearance as possible since I need to board the car onto a ferry to go racing on another island.
I really like the set-up Dutchesscamaro posted on the true duals sticky.

i agree... there is no point is spending all the time in making and installing a true dual and not get the full benifits from it.... stick w/ the ypipe and catback... try a flowmaster or magniflow... if you still want to do the true duals then just go with one set of Dynomax Super Turbo's they should quiet it down abit... let me know if you want some help w/ the true dual set up... i have one and it only rand me about 250 for the headers to just b4 the rear axle. the rest should run me about 100 to 150 out the back... good luck

to the OP: i suggest you try and find yourself a dual-in/dual-out, large single muffler. bassani has one of those on their TD system and it's not loud (as in normal TD or loudmouth loud). another good choice would be two hooker aerochamber mufflers.
the hard part is simply making them fit. there's a few people on here with LS1 f-bodies running flowmaster 40 series mufflers. i'd ask them for a pic of their setup. if you can fit 2 flowmaster 40 series in there, you'll be able to fit nearly any 2 full-sized mufflers.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
Two true pipes @ 2.5" are going to outflow my current Magnaflow cat-back which pinches to a single 2.75".
I know I will lose some which I do not mind.
I was not planning on using some standard muffler but a straight thru type, hence the bullets.
Killer1320, what magnaflow mufflers are you specifically using after the dynomax bullets?
I wonder how the powerstick exhaust sounds...hmmm..
Thanks and keep them coming.

I've been thinking of doing the same thing lately. I have a MIG welder just sitting in the garage.
I've been thinking LT's, metallic cats, X-pipe, 2- 20" Powersticks then out the back. (wanna model it after the 455 T/A that Kook's fabbed up) If she is too loud i'll toss in a couple resonators.

IMO, stick with the stock y-pipe setup, a good catback and throw in a cutout for the track.

here is a comparison video of my cammed LS1 running true duals.
the first one is LTs, 3" Xpipe (no cats) dumped at the axle.
the 2nd is the same setup with magnaflow 4x9" straight thru mufflers dumped at the axle. you almost can't hear the car running with them. the camera wasn't moved from one to the other.
now the car is not quiet with the mufflers, but it's MUCH better than the ear splitting sound of straight pipes.
if you ran some bullets before these mufflers, you'd have about the quietest TD setup probably. i would try the mufflers alone first...see how you like the sound.

Try to fit bullets before the axle then run it out the back and put two larger mufflers before the tips. Magnaflow or Dynomax larger mufflers will work well but it will NOT be "quiet". I have the larger dynomax mufflers on my duals and it's not bad except for cold starts. After it gets to 150* or so, it's pretty tame, just gotta be gentle on the gas. Still rattles the stuff upstairs though lol
