Default Cat-back/What mods?

A friend of mine at work just bought an 02 z06. It has long tube hedders, and aftermarket mid-pipe. What cat-backs are some of the best sounding and performing for this car? He also has a CAI with some sort of split ram air that goes down into his air ducts in the bumper cover. This is about all thats done performance wise to the car. What are some bolt-ons that he can buy? I'm new to the LS engines, and it looks like i'll be the one helping him with his car, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

All cat-backs are so close in performance that it doesn't really make a difference. It all depends on his opinion. (Which one sounds better, which tips look better, etc.) Go to ls1sounds.com to listen to all different set-ups.

For tuning options, you should ask in the reional forums. As for other bolt-ons, you could go with a different exhaust. But, I don't know if it would be for anything much other than sound or appearance. The stock exhuast is light (titanium) and flows ok IIRC. You put an aftermarket exhaust on and it may add weight. I'd suggest cutouts if you're looking for more horsepower. Porting the throttle body might get you another 5hp or so. An underdrive pulley, electric water pump and FAST intake manifold might get you another 5~10hp each on stock internals. Other than that, your friend is close to the point of looking at a cam or power adder for any worthwhile gains in power.

check out the free mods for a start. Have him start looking into cam options, as the ls6 heads flow pretty well from the factory.

What does he want from the car, and we can give you some better advice.

He is pretty much car illiterate. I will sit him down and ask detailed questions tomorrow at work. This is his first sports car/ hot rod.

Got a buddy with a stock 99 vette with just a cat-back. Its a corsa, and it sounds like an outboard motor on his car. Maybe its just because all he has is a cat-back?

huh, weird. the ones i heard sound REALLY good. i've heard a vette or two with corsa and they sound good. so does the CTS-V. that sounds REALLY NICE with corsa. normally, i'm anti-catback, but since corvettes have true duals, a true dual catback is definitely not a bad idea, and corsa everything is top of the line, not to mention consistently the best looking.

does your buddy have an O/RH or an O/RX? if he swapped the stock H-pipe to an X-pipe or cut the cats off, that could contribute to the poor quality sound. LSx motors, simply put, sound better with cats the vast majority of the time and an H-pipe produces superior sound to an X-pipe in most people's opinions.

If I were him I would keep the stock exhaust and do some headers and/or high flow cats

I agree with what most people have already pointed out. Your buddy has an advantage by starting out with an already amazing platform, and at this point a cat-back will only serve to significantly change his exhaust note.

I think it's time he thought about a cam and tune and start to think about what he wants to do with his heads.

keep the stock catback, stock one is sufficient on the Z06's, spend the money elsewhere, nitrous setup FTW!

He has hedders and high flow cats, but a stock cat-back. He bought the car from a doctor.
