Default In the middle of SLP LT install need help to remove steering rack.

Hey guys Im in the middle of putting in my SLP LT's and I got the passenger side up in there by moving the tranny over but I cannot get the drivers side up there. I keep hitting the steering column and head bolts on the other side, I can see that if the steering u joints were moved out of the way I would have plenty of room,, only problem is Im not sure how to take the steering u joints out and I do not know if there are any consequences, if somebody can comment on this please let me know cause im stuck in the middle of the installation.

It's really easy. I think it's a 12mm bolt near the top of the knuckle, and another near the bottom. Remove these two bolts and slide the knuckle assembly up until it disengages from the lower gear. After that, slide it down to get it off of the steering shaft. Repeat in reverse to reattach (make sure your wheels and steering wheel are centered before-hand).

When I put on my hooker lts I tryed to get the steering shaft off but could not get the bolt off at the rack in pinion for nothing (I struggled for about 1.5 hrs and I am not a small guy) so I just eventually ground the casting ear off the block. I don't know if that will work with the slps though. Good Luck.

I was told about moving the likage after I did the motor mount. I think it would have been alot easier that way. I unbolted the motor mount from the engine block (4 bolts) and raised the motor less than an inch and it slid right up. Lowered the motor and the bolts lined right up. (lucky?) I ended up with a small rubbing of the linkage on the headers so if you do end up doing the linkage you may want to check the clearence before you finish. Stick with it and do it right. Take your time, it'll be worth the effort! <img src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

I did it by taking the steering knuckle off. Now to see if I can get it back on,, I should have done it this way in the first place it took the steering knuckle to be off and to move the tranny,, well I think that the worst part is over. Thanks guys for the help and quick responses.

i just pried the transmission over, and it went in in less than 10 minutes or so...ten million times easier than the passenger side. i did have it pried over pretty far if that made a difference or not...well worth the work though

TA I was cursing myself cause you said you did it so easy,, I kept thinking I must be doing something wrong, I finally got it but damn it was not easy for me at all,, the passenger side went in with little effort which I also thought was strange.

Wetall, I dont recall if you have a M6 or A4 but
this is very strange that your car seems to be
opposite of several others. I recall the drivers
side expisode; I was really upset with my 13 yearold and had run here in the house for unrelated problem, I was able to use the board
and push the transmission over towards the pass side and wiggle the header up into place.
I do recall taking off as many of those heat shield parts as I thought nessary to make a clear path.
Wetall im glad that you got them installed, Lets
hear your thoughts on results..
