Default Bang for Buck Which Headers ar the BEST?????

Mant people say that the $1200 TTS, FLP and The G word(dunno how to spell it much less say it) are some of the best headers but is there an alternative for people that cant/dont want to afford those headers and still have the power and quality??? I am thinking about going with the Hooker headers, since hooker has always had some good quality products. I want to invest my money in something that is worth it and I am a little concerned on the ability to install relatively easy, if I can get a good price on the headers I might not worry about that. I'de like any input you guys think is helpful. Any at all will be appreciated!!!

Uncoated MACs w/ off-road... you can't beat the price and performance.

I agree with Jason. For the money, it's hard to compete with the MAC setup. I had them on my car for two years. They can be slightly improved by cleaning up the welds inside the tubes @ the header flange itself, and by cutting off the ball flange and making the collector a true 3".

When I switched to the Dynatech's, I did see some overall gains, but the MACs do hold their own.

The new Hooker long tubes look promising as well, but don't come with any type of Y-pipe, which can be a problem for a lot of folks who want to run a full exhaust but can't fab up their own Y or don't have someone local that will do it for a reasonable price...

I know of a place that I can get a Y pipe made pretty cheap. I have heard the that the Hookers have some sealing problems because they have a thin flanges..... would it be worth taking the risk to see if they do seal off good and have the few extra horses???? or should I just jump right on the MAC's on not worry about the Hookers?????
Thanks for the info guys!!

For you guys that are thinking about the Hooker LTs, Mufflex has just released information that they will begin production of an ORP on April 1st that is specifically made for the Hookers.

You can get either a 3" collector or 4" collector to mount up to your cat-back. Here's the link:

http://www.mufflex-performance.com/y-pipe.html

I'll be getting one real soon!!!

Kyle

MAC's hands down. But, to get MAC then later move to something else isn't going to help. I suggest waiting till you have the cash to buy exactly what you want.

Josh,
JBA makes a shortie style header, the quality and fitment are supposed to be real good although I don't have any personal experience with them. Might take a look at them. I have FLP LT's.

As stated, the best bang-for-the-buck out there are the Macs. They're cheap, and they work well. I'd stay away from the shorties IMO. I tried a set of the Hooker shorties on my '98 T/A when they first came out, and I gained 0 HP on the dyno and 0 ET at the track. Just stick w/ the stock manifolds until you're ready for the mid-lengths or LT's. I agree w/ John that you should wait until you can get what you want. If you want the Hookers, then I'd go with them the first time. My T/A had a set of Hooker shorties, Macs, and finally FLP's. Header swaps suck.

I think I will go with the MAC's and then later on change to some long tubes b/c I think I should give em a try anyway just to see what they are like.... I would like some TTS' or Grot's but I don't really understand why they are SOOO high really... Another reason I will probably go with the MAC's is I will be doing a head/cam swap next summer and I'de also like to see the difference in a long tube and a mid lenght and see if there is any at all.... I imagine there will be some but probably not worth the $700 more that you will pay for LT's .... IMO anyway.... Maybe I it will change my mind..... I'll have to wait and see!!

I like the TTS headers. Mac's are the best bang for the buck, but I gained good numbers with the TTS long tubes, and with cats. I can't wait to get my test pipes made!!

MAC's! This is also coming from a FLP customer, I would have saved $500 and ran exactly the same.

I gotta disagree here. I purchased the Hooker LT and ORY for $580 (Jet-hot coated LTs) and $160 (uncoated ORY). For a total of $830 including O2 simms. Or ~$600 for uncoated stuff (including O2 simms). I have no issues at all, considering they are not for my car. I had to modify my air tubes to work with the LT, but man I love them now.

Without question, Macs!
And this is coming from yet another unhappy FLP customer. Not only did my FLP's rust after a few months, but the fitment is so bad it is humorous. I had two different sets of FLPs on my '99 Z28 and they both rusted. They also hit the floor board on the driver's side and the frame on the passenger side.
Then, yesterday I just put them on my '02 Z28 and the driver's side is so bad that I would have to carve 3 or 4 inches off the floor board to make it fit. I have to run open headers to an exhaust shop so they can bend me a custom y-pipe that will fit. All for $1200! What a bargain!

Coated macs are the way to go.Ask JMX he gained o peak hp by switching to long tubes but he did pick up in mid range area but zero peak.I would go macs first time out and call it good. That extra 700 bucks is better spent on a converter or clutch IMO.
