Default Replace seal with ASP pulley install?

Is a seal replacement needed when I install my ASP crank pulley? I've heard yes and also heard that it is not needed. Pulley is on the way and want to do it right. Thanks.

It would be a good idea to replace the crank seal, but it is not absolutely necessary. I have heard of them tearing after trying to remove/reinstall the pulley.

The crank bolt is a 24mm.

Inspect the seal after you take off the old pulley. That's the only way you can tell if it needs to be replaced. If it's not torn or cracked, it's fine.

Or, just do it. It's an extremely cheap part. I can't remember if you need to pull the timing cover to get it out - if I remember right, you do. If so, you need to take off the water pump to get the timing cover off.

If you're going to replace the crank seal, you have to remove the timing cover. I don't see any reason to do this, though.

I don't see how disrupting or removing the stock balancer hurts the crank seal. Hoever... it's only a few more bolts if you wish to inspect the crank seal. Remove the timing cover, and then under a nice, bright light, inspect it for gouges, tears or weak or worn spots. They're only a few dollars. But getting them out of the timing cover is a bitch. There's a special tool for doing that, I used a screwdriver and it took forever.

the pulley seems like it's more trouble than it's worth. I wanna do it but all this recent talk of KR and now replacing the crank seal?? Is it really worth the trouble <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

A pulley doesn't require anything but a long breaker bar, a six-point socket (I don't remember what size... I think it's 18-mm for the balancer bolt) and a three jaw puller. No seals require replacement. The whole thing shouldn't take you more than 2-3 hours to install, maximum.

We've done like seven pulley swaps and have never replaced the crank seal.

When putting in a new bolt, do you use Loc-tite also. I've heard yes and no, since the new bolt has something already on it. Any input?

It pops out from the front with a standard seal puller. It's a few minutes and $5, I don't know why anyone even has to think about it, but thats me....

mine leaks, wtf i dont have time to dick with it, its going to the dealer tomorrow or wednesday. worst that can happen is they won't cover it and I'll have to pay for it. can't be that much.

they might cover it anyway, who knows. hard to relate a pulley causing and oil seal failure, in my mind anyway.
