Default SLP LT install question

I'm having trouble installing the passanger side header. Does anyone have an opioning on the best way to install it? Also, should I put anything on the bolts that connect the headers to the heads (i.e. LocTight)?
Thanks,

Here is how I did my install for slp

http://ls1info.com/article.php?sid=149

The header bolts.. clean them up with a
wire brush from a dremmel tool.. then
they will go back in easy. I used about
one drop of red lock tite on each bolt.

drop the starter, unplug any wires in the way(oil sensor) drop trans down by removing crossmember, shift trans to the drivers side. most importantly do the passengers side BEFORE the drivers side.

On the passengers side I removed the air conditioning lines and canister for ease of installation

Good info, The pass side is a b***h I just installed one yesturday, kept trying and trying, and then it seemed the Car Gods separated the engine bay and it slide right in.

Granted partway through the install the header fell out of the car and I hit my self in the head with the header, so I was seeing stars too!

Thanks for the info!

I'll be locked in the garage the rest of the night trying to install the header so wish me luck. I hope the car gods are generous.

I just put a set on my t/a. whoever said it was a easy install was crazy. i found the easiest thing was the remove the spark plugs and pry the tranny to the drivers side. Although it took 2 of us to move it far enough to slide it up. after that it wasnt that bad. But after taking it to the track...it was worth it.

Thanks for the advise!

I finally got the headers in and the car back together. It sounds pretty cool and it pulls nice. I'm curious to see how much the headers will reduce my E.T. The only problem I have is my y-pipe is banging! So I'll still need to mess around with that, but in general I'm happy with the final product. As a side note, the install was a pain in the butt!

Thanks again

Accelr8,
How high did jack your front end. I'm in the middle on an install and I have not gotten either side in. I have read all the post; moving the trans to each side and so on. Did you support the trans or just let in hang after you unbolted the cross member? Just looking for pointers.

Thanks in advance

Thxone,

I put car ramps under all four tires and then placed three 2X8 pieces of lumber under each front tire. Before I placed the wood under the front tires, I screwed them together to make sure they were stable and would not shift.

I put the drivers side header in first. I had to remove the oil filter and then slid the header up until it just touched the steering column. Then I had a friend slowly turn the steering wheel until the header slid by. I didn't have to lower the trans or shift it towards the passanger side. It sounds simple but it took a little effort to get it in.

To install the passanger side I took the trans support out while supporting the trans with a jack and then slowly lowered the trans until it hung by itself. I also removed the starter. Then I had a friend pry the trans towards the drivers side while I slid the header in. This was very difficult and we had to use a lot of force in order to move the trans over far enough. This really made me nervous, because I was afraid of breaking something. But it worked out OK.

I would recommend installing the passanger side header first. We had to take all the bolts out of the drivers side header except one to make sure it didn't get in the way when we shifted the trans over.

Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions, hopefully I can help.

rick,
the secrets are:
1. Give yourself plenty of time to do it.
2. Get a friend to help with it. you'll be glad you did.
3. Take all the plugs outof both sides. might want to go ahead and change them now if you need to. this will be the easiest it ever will.
4. maybe the m6 is different but the a4 is a heavy bi-atch! it took 2 of us to move it far enough to slide the headers up.
5. get the car as high as you can. at least get the tires 12-15 inches off the ground. remember you are going to put these in from the bottom.
6. DONT GET FRUSTRATED AND GIVE UP!!! it really will fit. i found the hardest thing was hooking the y pipe up actually.
believe me....it will be worth the time and effort.
p.s if it rattles under the driver side...get a 3" radiator hose and cut it in 1/2. slide it over the y pipe right at the driver cat. sheet metal it to the floor. easy fix. in this spot, its got about a 1/4" - 1/2 " gap between the pipe/floor.
oh yeah, good luck!!

Just finished my install and I would like to thank all who posted replys. Just a few notes: I had my 2000 SS on Sears Craftsman 3 ton Stands at their highest level. My tires were approx 10 inches from the floor. Everything came together when I unbolted the trans cross member and let the trans hang at it's lowest level (not supported by a jack). I had a friend push the trans to the opposite side I was trying to install, and both sides went up. I too had a little trouble with the Y-pipe, but not too bad after dropping the rubber hangers at the rear of the car first.

jason99ws6,

Thanks for the info. Last year I ran my car when it was stock and turned a 13.60 @ 105 (2.28 60') I need to improve my 60'!!! I'm still not used to launching with a stick (that's obvious). Since then I added a MTI lid and the SLP LT's with cats. I hope I see similar results to yours when I run the car later this spring. Unfortunately, in Cleveland, Ohio, the tracks don't open until late April.

Acceler8,
man that would drive me crazy waiting that long until the track opened! Although here in GA on the TNT nights you lucky to get 3 runs in from 6-11pm! usually there is about 100-200 cars there. we had one night that they stayed open late cause' they said there was over 350 cars!!
But i was happy with the results. The best part about installing them was putting a hurt on a Z06 vette. he ended up winning (12.98 / 13.14 ) but i had him squirming till the end! got it on video too! and thats with the cats on!! i think i might have had him if the ORP were on!!!
i think you be pleased with your results!!

Is it true that if your un SLP LT you can't run the Eiback Pro Kit because the Headers reduce the ground clearance so much?
