i had my car done for awhile now drove it a few days with no problems no noises then the other day i hear a ticking so like usual i suspect a loose spark plug cap or an exhaust leak i pop the hood and every single one of my header bolts are loose ones almost backed out all the way.. and i dropped it and cant find it again, i suspect the k memeber ate it.. anyway onto the question wich bolts get tight and stay tight?
anyone ever have any stud's backing out?

and also dont know how much torque to apply by hand to the soft aluminum heads (torque wrench has no prayer of fitting in there) any specail torque measuring instruments that will ?

does the stock style aluminum also hold its shape or torque against the bolts better then the percy's graphite covered(looks like felt) aluminum one's kooks provides?

I used arp bolts, and they didnt back out more than half a turn. but it was horrible trying to get the threads started, took almost 10min everybolt, and ended up using a few stock bolts. But i think you didnt torque them down enough, cause no bolt should come out all the way.

Stage 8 bolts are stainless and have locking clips that prevent the bolts from backing out.

The stock gaskets can be re-used, I'm not sure the same can be said for Percy's.

My torgue spec was make it pretty tight using a 10 mm gear wrench or a 1/4" drive ratchet. You don't need to crank the heck out of it even with a small wrench. But I would look into getting some locking fasteners, like the Stage 8, so they don't back out on you again.

I you want to stick with the studs, I would install them with red lock-tite, and use a nylock nut or lock washers w/regular nuts.

FWIW, I am using Breslin locking bolts, they work well but they are rediculously expensive, and I also heard that they are no longer in business.

I have used these design of bolt, but the company that made mine are no longer making them. I never had a problem with them. In fact i will probably be buying these for my new car.

thanks for the replys went with stage 8's with the locking clips, ang going with the stock style gaskets if the percy's wont seal up.

Absolutely not. All you do is take off the clip and retainer and back out the bolt. Trust me this is not rocket science.

I went with ARP stainless steel studs, I've checked them every day after a week's worth of driving (temps in the 40's to 60's outside) and surprisingly none have backed out in the slightest, each one is as tight as when I put them on.

I'm pretty much convinced they're not coming off, been driving the car every day, stop and go, hard blasts etc.

i bought arp header stud's for 100 dollars and used thread locker when i installed the studs. i dont drive the car much but from what i can tell the studs aren't going to be backing out but you are saposta retorque the stud bolts every so often. also percerys seal 4 good gaskets are a good choice for gaskets

spdfrk, I'm just trying to tell it like it is. I have had a good experience with the Stage 8 fasteners. They are fairly cheap and work well. I don't know what else to say, end of story.

OK thats what I waned to know you said its not rocket science well no ****. I was just wondering if the tight space of the 4thgen engine compartment made it a pain with the clips.

u dont need some fancy *** bolts. sometimes when you put headers on, and heat cycle the engine, the bolts will come loose. just re-tighten them down after you run the car for a few days. ive seen it plenty of times. the bolts SHOULDNT come back out once you heat cycle the motor and re-torque the bolts.

The ARP studs are nice, but pretty expensive. You can get a set of studs and locking nuts in M8 x 1.25 from a local Honda dealer. Every Honda uses these studs, and they are excellent quality. You can have a set of twelve Honda studs and nuts for around $50.

I used Breslin bolts on my '96, worked GREAT.. they were more expensive then, coming out to 115$ or so. Never had another problem though.

I have used the stock ones over, and I have used ARP studs. All depends on how much you are wanting to spend.
