Default How the freak do you get the stock pully off?!

I was at the local speed shop to have my ASP pully installed and do a dyno test today. they pull the belts, put the car in the air and proceed to try and pull the pully off. They ended up putting so much pressure on thier pully puller that it crashed the washers in it. After 2 1/2 hours of them yanking, applying pressure, spraying with penetrating fluid they could not get it off. I did notice that they aere using a 2 pronged puller. The directions said a 3 prong puller. Could that be the difference between getting it off and fighting with it all day. So I ended up eating 75.00 for labor that produced nothing. I am a little pissed but they tried everything. Any helpfull hints that you guys know of to help me get the stinking stock pully off? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I used a 3 jaw puller there is a tool to hold the fly wheel/flex plate so the motor don't turn over. I also removed the fans for more room to work.If you buy a puller try and find one with fine threads on the shaft.get some tension on the pulleytake a steel punch and hammer put the punch on the inside of the pulley next to where the jaws of the puller are and hit it a few good hits should give it a vibration that will help loosen it up kind of shock it. Good luck. Rich

I took my pulley off two days ago with a Craftsman 9-46906 I bought at the local sears. I put it together as a 3 jaw (it can be both). I also used it as a 2 jaw to pull the timing gear off the crank snout.

It was pretty tight.

Sounds like the shop didn't know what they were doing to me.

We had myself, the mechanic and one of the guys from the NW Fbody group who is very familiar with the LS1 and between the three of us we couldnt get it off. We tried 2 different pullers and 4 different tips on the puller for pressure on the crank snout bt it wouldnt even budge a millimeter. I will go to dsears tomorrow and pick up that craftsman puller and try it. My guess is because we only used a 2 jaw puller that the pressure wasnt evenly distibuted around the pully. the shop I took it to is the best one in the northwest. The guys there really know thier stuff, but this even left them stumped.

I know this is a stupid question but did he remove the crank bolt first???

I mean, 99.99% of everyones troubles is getting the crank bolt loose...not the pulley out. I didn't see any mention of that in your post.

Funny you should say that. That is the first question everyone asked us when we started making calss to all the local guys out here. But yes the crank bolt was out. the reason I know that for sure is that I watch the tech. put it back in and torque it back down. I am just wondering what is keeping the darn thing on there so tight. I am going to pick up the craftsman 3 arm pully today and give it a shot and see if the 3 vs. 2 was what was causing us not to get it off. When the tech was working on it he really didnt want to start hammering on the pully for fear of beding the crank snout. How hard can you hit on that thing before you need to worry?

If you are worried about the crank hit the shaft of the pulleron the top there my not be enough room with radiator in you may have to remove it. You should be able to hit the balancer with out hurting the crank or the pullejust watch where you are hitting it at I would hit it in the center between the spokes so to speak like right next to where the puller jaws attach to the pulley. in the worst case you may have to heat it up you need to be very carful and you will need a new crank seal. I have had to do this on old big blocks never on a new ls1. good luck.

We thought about heating the pully to get it off but scrapped the idea because of the aluminum block radiating the heat to much to the seal. Last thing I want to do is replace that bad boy. I will make a couple shots at it tonight and see if it works. I have the 3 arm pully now and we'll see what happens!

I did mine yesterday using a 3 prong puller that I got at Autozome. I used the "inside" option so the prongs went inside the pulley. I left the old pulley bolt in just far enough that it was threaded about 1 turn. Put the center of the puller on the head of the bolt and set about turning on it. An occasional tap with a 2x4 and hammer on the back of the pulley as I was turning the puller, and it began to back off. The bolt wasn't quite long enough to get the pulley 100% off, but once it got to the max that the puller could handle, a few good whacks with the 2x4 and hammer on the back and it came right off.

Don't get me wrong, it was very tight and put a lot of strain on the puller. Like the other guys said, go with a good 3 prong puller that can hook to the inside of the pulley and push on the head of the old bolt. Combine that with a few taps on the back with a 2x4 and some patience.

Good luck,

I did mine last week. The crank pulley came off really easy after I got a good puller. It might have taken me 30 minutes to get the bolt out, belts off, and stock pulley off. The car only has 4,000 miles on it so that might have helped.

Best puller technique is to get the puller
dogged down so it's got good preload, and then
"ring" the pulley hub with a drift and hammer.
You can use a cheapo 3/8" extension or a piece
of cold-rolled, if you don't have a nice non-
marking brass drift. You want to hit the inner
(hub) part of the pulley, not the outer part
of the pulley. Just keep the preload on, and
keep ringing its bell. Eventually it will creep.
Then retighten the puller and go again (until
the puller just pulls the pulley, heh).

You may want to ping alternating sides for luck,
or to reduce boredom. Just keep at it, patience
is cheaper than violence.

You must use a 3 jaw puller on those three tabs on the center of the pulley right adjacent the bolt. Like others say, thread the bolt back in about 2 turns so you dont screw up the threads. I broke a cheap 3 jaw puller last night. It had coarse threads and the one I used before has fine threads for more pulling power. With the fine threaded one, it pulled the pulley right off.
