Default open exhaust ! fact or fiction?

My buddy has a bone stock 2000 Z-28, and is too cheap to by some headers. He wants to saw off the exhaust pipes just past the cats. I think that he will end up deaf from the excess noise and the local cops (I am one of them by the way) will not appreciate loud pipes (unlike me, my car sounds like a nascar stock car with cutouts) Should I break out the welder and put some cut-outs past the cats for him, or just call him a cheap bastard, and tell him to save his money. Could he damage the engine from his cheapness?
the car may be loud enough to hurt small animals and children!

Let the cheap b@st@rd cut off his exhaust. A couple days of bleeding ear drums, and maybe a traffic ticket later and he'll be sorry he incurred the cost of a new exhaust. His cheapness will cost him more than a set of headers would have. Oh... And he'll still have all that fine backpreasure from the stock manifolds so his power gains will be negligible in comparison to his discomfort.

I just can't immagine chopping up a 2000 car like that. Maybe '76 Nova or something, but not a new Z-28.

PS.
On the plus side, When the entire exhaust is missing, he will have the perfect opportunity to bolt on those headers. ;>

I forwarded your thoughts to him, he is currently sitting on my couch, eating my food, drinking my beer and trying to figure out how he can get cable for free in his studio apartment. LMAO!

I drove around all day Sunday with open LT's. Never got a second look from the cops. But if would be for a daily car I wouldn't do it. It sounded dam good though .

Well, if you read the fine print, you'll notice this is a bone stock 01 with the pipes removed after the cats: http://store6.yimg.com/I/outlawperformance_1674_6834982

I don't think it would dyno that high with them still on... Of course, I don't know what other "tricks" the dyno guy also tried to do.

LMAO! Come and get your brother in law off my couch! He still wants to hack up his car, but I just ordered a cutout to put before the muffler. Thanks for the advice, only cost me 35 bucks to get the idea out of his head. I am terrified about what he will do next, to go faster. Steal a N2O tank from a dentist office, remove all fenders, bumpers, hood, hatch, glass, seats, dash for weight saving. Or maybe try to buy (steal) a surplus F-16 engine from the local Air Force Base.

I vote for the cutout as well. Do some searches here, there are a couple different locations you can put it, each with thier positives and negatives.

I can give some suggestions on where to "put" that cutout which may or may not cure your friend's ills.

Many people, me included, have cut their stock catback at the rear end and unbolted the muffler. You can unbolt the sigle pipe from the y-pipe so that you have no exhaust after the stock y-pipe.

I always start out like this until I go to a custom header/x-pipe/dual exhaust. Why spend money on a catback when it won't outperform just removing the stock unit combined with the weight savings.

I think it sounds really good and I get a lot of compliments. It does not sound as loud as a car with a cutout or open borla.

I agree. For $120 the shop took off my muffler, welded a nice y where it was, and put on tips (which I bought from them, included in the $120).
They did an awesome job! The tips are 16" long and 4" diameter stainless slash tips. The tips and their work are guaranteed for life!! They also started it up and made sure both sides flowed perfectly even. They said if it didn't they were going to do it over for no charge.
Screw $600+ catbacks! I get sooo many compliments on the sound of my exhaust!
Do it my way!
Nick
