It's a debate that will go on because each car reacts differently to each MAF. For some cars it will help and some will hurt its performance depending on mods. I've found that a MAF translator significantly helps tune a rich or lean condition when using either MAF. The idea to increase the size of the MAF is to let more air pass through freely which supposedly should produce more power. When you go with that line of thinking and seeing plenty of people are stepping up to the "larger volume" LS6 intake than a stock LS1 intake its hard to believe that a smaller or stock size MAF produces more power than a larger size MAF.
That's my 2 cents!
The computer calculates the amount of air going thru the MAF to the engine using the area that was given originally. When we de-screen, port or enlarge the MAF then we seem to get some problems because the estimated air and the actual air are not the same, we get more air, therefore the car will not add enough fuel and leans out the car to much.
The MAF is a great idea with tuning or LS1 Edit. If you are going to do that you might as well get a ported T/B too.

I am going on the dyno this weekend with my 02 Hawk, and I'm going to swap the MAF's and see if there is a difference (if there is time at the end of the day). I'll let everyone know if I see anything interesting.
