Default Underdrive pulley

I've seen several dyno posts claiming 7-12rwhp from underdrive pulleys. No doubt they free up power. I have 2 huge amplifiers (1400W Soundstream 4ch & Kicker zx850.2), and to run an underdrive pulley on the crank would have to run an overdrive alternator pulley. What kind of gain do you think an underdrive/overdrive setup would offer? 2-3HP?

Sounds like a lot of mixed opinions in that thead. I have used underdrive pulleys in the past, and they always have seemed to allow a faster rev and create a hair more power - although I never dynoed. If it wasn't for having to use an overdrive pulley on the alt, I wouldn't hestiste on my WS6. I may wait on this mod until after the camshaft. I know a good cam will give me good gains.

With a larger system like you have, I'd skip this one. The gains are pretty small...good if you are looking for that last little bit, but not if you are looking for the most bang for the buck.

Only reason I put one on is because I was doing the cam. I debated about it too.

From my personal experience:

I've had my Powerbond 25% underdrive pulley for quite some time, but I'll be ditching it and going back to a stock sized ATI superdamper. Before my aftermarket alternator (160-amp) went out, I had to idle my engine at 925 RPMs to get it to charge. I'm sure that had more to do with the alternator than anything, but it was still a pain to deal with (and it seems like it is a common problem with aftermarket alternators).

So basically its safe to say that getting an underdrive pulley is kind of a waste of money for the little gain that you are going to get from it, that you would be better off putting that money into something else?

For me, that was the case...I never even noticed a difference. Other people can justify it for whatever reasons they may have. I started noticing a trend with some of the higher performance engines out there (like the ones that are entered in the Engine Masters' Challenges), and there are quite a few that use the ATI Superdampers. I've talked with Tony Mamo about this as well, and he likes the Superdampers on cars running a larger stroke crank...not a necessity, but when you are spending that much on a rotating assembly, a little insurance is nice to have.

An underdrive pulley will generally free up power for a reasonable cost, but I would have to have an overdrive pulley to keep my alternator spinning enough for my stereo system (amplifiers). I love the underdrive on my SS Monte Carlos.

Ya, i have it on my 05 Monte Carlo SS thats supercharged, and i like it, its just with my Camaro, i dont know if its worth putting the money towards it, or just getting that superdamper thing.
