They are charging way too much for their OEM lid...I am happy with my other SLP lid...

I've got the OE lid and it looks really good under the hood. I'm sure it performes no better than the aftermarket lids. BUT I bought it because my 35th LE has the potential to be a valuable car one day and it's a little extra part that could be added to the sticker. So...I paid a little more and have the aftermarket performance, with the OE look.

This new lid is exactly what I've been wanting for a long time. I have tried three different aftermarket lids, and always end up using weatherstripping to get the seal with the filter right. The tabs on the back of the aftermaket lids are all the same - flimsey. They bend down after the lid is clamped down a few times, and then the back side of the lid does not seal tight on the filter. And also the front of the lids have a tendency to warp near the clamps. I'll pay the extra money, if that new SLP lid is as strong as stock, but flows at least as good as the other aftermarket lids. BTW, the ones i have tried are the Whisper "carbon-fiber look", the MTI, and now am using the Direct-Flo. The D.F. has been the strongest plastic so far. The MTI warped horribly.

Donaldson had alot to do with the design of the lid too. Hence, they rated getting their brand name on it.

Donaldson (http://www.donaldson.com)is a high tech filter company. They do air filtration systems for semi-conductor manufacturers, military equipement, construction equipement, etc.

How could a part be considered OE if it hits the hood? GM would never allow it. That is why SLP Engineering had to stick with the stock shape, so it wouldnt hit the hood.

SLP Engineering is doing it. The only pic they have is under "Optional Content" on the SS page. I have 3 decent pics on my site, the links are above. Those were of the prototype.

With the end of f-car emminent, SLP Engineering will be revamping their home page, with a replacement parts section of the site.

I took delivery for my SS in late November with the 20hp option making it 345hp. I have the name "Black Wing" on my lid. Does anyone else with that package have that?

260.00 option, as i recall, invoice.

The aftermarket lids are too flimsy to seal as well as the OEM unit. I really believe this is the only real advantage the SLP lid has besides looks. I am considering the lid for my new 409 engine for this very reason. Why risk such a large investment for a $100 lid?

I think you missed my point. My point is that the lid does NOT give any horsepower increase. For 10 horsepower, I'll put up with a little rubbing. I am sick of hearing about proprietary flow tests, that is a big bunch of crap. My car with the new lid made the same HP and TQ numbers as three 2001 Firehawks on the same dyno on the same day! There was no 10 HP increase!

Could someone please do a dyno test comparing stock lid to aftermarket lid to OEM Firehawk lid? I'll chime in for Chris here and say that SLP did run a test but it is proprietary, so you'll have to take his word for it!

The data is really proprietary.

JeffY, the SLP Chief Engineer posted this today. This man knows his stuff. Prior to joining SLP, he was the F-car Project manager at GM. He was also the C4 Project Mgr, and did alot of work on the ZR1. His credentials are impressive. I know him well enough to take him at his word. If you chose not to believe him fine.

The new lid flows better than any other lid. It was developed and tested on a flow bench by one of the premier air filtration companies in the world. The shapes were determined by airflow studies. The SLP OE airlid is a system that works in conjunction with the Donaldson filter. HP gains with other filters will yield lower numbers. Its not the size of the opening but how the air transitions to the opening and what can stop it. The amount of air getting to the MAF is not as critical as the smoothness of it. The amount of air that enters the box and its path to the MAF were extensively reviewed as well as the design of the filter. As I've said before, its the best one that was tested. Its also the only one that has a warranty the same as Chevy gives you. Its the only one made to the same dimensions and material specs. Its the only one sold as a complete system, with all the parts you need to keep it from hitting the hood.

all this comes at a premium price. if it's too much for you, it is understandable.

All data starts out "proprietary". It's the
property of whoever created it (or paid for the
work). That doesn't have squat to do with whether
it can be published; that has only to do with
the owner's willingness to stand up with it.

The value of the public's seeing good data is
usually judged to be more than the value of
keeping it hidden. The opposite, for data that's
not so favorable.

And that's how most people seem to understand it.
