Question Question about Catylic Converters

I see that there are numerous threads in the WTB section of a number of different LSx sites, and it occured to me, what the heck is the deal w/ the cats?

For what seems like YEARS there are those that are gutting, cutting, bypassing their cats, and now all of a sudden their a desired item?

Also, what is w/ the $$ that people are paying for them, even used? Are there not shops out there that are selling "new" cats ( ie: CatCo ) for alot less than that?

Please discuss.

I think there may be many people that buy them to salvage the precious metals they contain. With the price of platinum the way it is, a small amount of metal retrieved means profit. People ask for them on forums like this one knowing that there are LOTS of folk that have removed their cats and just have them laying around.

well... even with cats, they give a smoother sound in my opinion. i've got the supermaxx system with hi flow cats. i love it. yes, the precious metal inside them is big in the scrap yards! plus, ppl that are converting their car back to stock to trade in, then sell their aftermarket pars to make a payment or two...3 even.

The prices of platinum are around $1200/ounce from what i found on the internet. The value of the amount in typical cats came out to about $60 for the platinum alone. Then there are other precious metals such as palladium, which can fetch $320 an ounce; and rhodium, which can go for up to $6,000 an ounce on the market.

Taken from wikipedia.
