i would like to see someone buy a flowmaster catback for a mustang and fit it to a custom H-pipe on a f-body, just to see what it sounds like

On my 03' Cobra, as well as my former 03' Mach 1 I have had catted magnaflow x-pipes on both, the Mach had magnaflows- the Cobra has Borlas and both have a nasty throaty WOT. (The Mach was a little more muffled cruising)

My wifes 00' SS has Edelbrock Shorties w/cats & Bassani True duals (X-pipe too) and is throaty but not crisp like my stangs (if that makes any sense).

I think C.I as well as CFM of the Ford heads for example give it its distinct sound. These small Fords are screamers.

Whereas our SS reminds me of an old Big Inch torque motor.

Well the mustang has a different CI motor, different head design, and most of all different firing order.

There was a thread a while back in Advanced Tech all about just what makes engines sound like they do. It was pretty good; one of the few dozen that actually deserve to be in that section. One person pointed out, and another agreed, that a certain electric motor that powers a carnival ride sounds just like an LS1. \0To sum it up: since engines are just big enternal combustion air pumps, everything that has anything to do with intaking air, exhausting fumes, and the process of burning fuel has to do with how it sounds. In other words, everything has everything to do with it.

CORRECT....there was an article about the mustang sound in 5.0 mustang mag a couple months aga and it is indeed b/c of the firing order, not b/c of an x or h pipe......

what stupid responses? i pray you don't mean firing order is a stupid response, as firing order has one of the biggest influences on engine sound out there.

my gf's dad has a 02 withthe 4.6 and personally I don't like the sound it of. Way to raspy and wayyy to loud. Not sure what kind of exhaust. straights? Either way I prefer my ls1, sounds much more like a bad *** muscle car.

I think the 5.0's sound good but I'm not a big fan of the 4.6's

Meh. I like both, but it wasn't easy to get the LS1 to sound good. Once you remove the cats on the LS1, you deal with a lot of rasp and drone.

i think what he is reffering to is all the responses about exhaust type and block type and head design, its THE FIRING ORDER PEOPLE

ok first block type, are you going to tell me a mustang with an iron block sound different than a mustang with a aluminum block, hope you would not really think thats going to happen

second exhaust, hope your kidding with anything that has to do with exhaust or h pipe or x pipe or flowmasters, come on people ever been to the track, tons of people run open headers, and you can definitely hear a difference between a ford and a chevy

and my favorite, head design, tell me a 95 5.0 does not sound very similar to a 96 4.6.... they have completely different heads, **** one has some cams thrown in up there

oh and cant forget, werd n2ogto, first one to break out the real reason 1-3-6-2-7-5-4-8

Like said before, it's mainly the firing order. But, having a true dual exhaust helps. I like the LS1 sounds, expecially a nicely cammed F or Y-body. But, my wife's 2000 Mustang GT with full Bassani headers, X-pipe, and catback is down right nasty!! It's wild when she does a fly-by right past me with my window open!!! RRRROOOAARRRRRRRR!!!! LOL.

Now she wants cams in it for that lopey idle! Cool!!!

I had a 91 LX 5.0 with BBK longtubes, X pipe, and Mac catback...everyone always asked me about how nasty it sounded. That thing sounded so freakin sweet, god I miss that. Too bad it was a freakin pooch compared to all the toys in my sig!

Well, that's crap too!

Ford has used several different firing orders for their small blocks over the years. And they all sound the same with an identical exhaust behind them. A coworker of mine has old 84 Mustang that someone else dropped in a non-HO 5.0L in it. He eventually over-revved that motor and put in a stock longblock from an 89 Mustang at it sounded no different...

i agree that it is most of the above reasons but it is also do to the stroke of the engine. the stroke is what determines the tone of the engine. the exhaust is also a big part of it. i have both a 5.0 and had a 4.6. the 4.6's (up to 2004) also come with 4 cats from the factory that play a big part in the sound. Flowmaster gives you the volume and sounds the best on the car. i ran mine with magnaflow, flowmaster, and straight pipes and the flowmaster's sounded the best! straight pipes were sweet though!

PS i did the cam thing and If i were you i would do some serious research before you put a set of cams in that car. it's not like the LS1's where you put a cam in and get an extra 100hp. i put what they call a stage 3 cam in it and didn't notice any more power. they told me on average you would gain about 11hp. that sucks. it did sound a little better but not like you would expect. i put compcams part number 102300 in the car. if it were me i would save that money and buy a blower. good luck!
