Magnaflow cat-back is on...
Magnaflow cat-back is on... ...and 2 days later the SES light comes on. Reading through other threads it seems that after some mods to the exhaust system this is typical but I didn't see anything about a SES light on after cat-back installation. Is this typical? If so what's the usual code that comes up?

magnaflow is stainless steel. when stainless steel heats up for the first time, it burns off a coating. the smell is really bad, but it burns off in a few days. my guess is the weird fumes produced by the stainless steel burning in for the first time caused the O2's to throw a code for some reason. my guess is that either:
1.) after a few days, driving cycles will reset the code and it'll go away for good
2.) if you clear the code at autozone (or do it yourself by removing the negative battery terminal), it won't come back
but i've been wrong many times before.

It's been on for 3 days now. As for the negative battery terminal, I saw in the instructions it said to disconnect before working on the car. I've seen this many times before on other jobs but I just thought it was a lawyer-induced disclaimer for safety reasons. And you're right about the stainless, the muffler smoked a lot after the initial test drive. Thing that gets me is the light came on 2 days after the installation. The stock muffler was so backed up/deteriorated that I thought the SES light coming on was the engine telling me, "Hell yeah, this is what I'm talking about! Breathing!!!!" But in the end, I'm still an LS1 nOOb.

No, it's a steady light. Again, thanks for the heads up on a possible fix. Also, thanks again for the GC oil thread a few months ago. Been using it since last Oct. and love it! Too bad Autozone here isn't carrying it anymore.

My light came on as well after I installed my lid and exhaust. No bid deal just get it tuned out if you plan on getting lt's or a cam. Usually as something to do with secondary air pump or some **** like that.
This makes absolutely no sense to me. I don't see how a cat-back would affect any of your O2's or your AIR or EGR system. I would definitely get the code read at the zone...it takes 5 minutes and it's free...do it already!!!
Just went to get some chow and guess what? The light is now off. I've driven the car maybe 8 - 10 times since the light came on. We'll see if it stays off. BTW there wre no drivability problems while the light was on.
