Battery voltage drops significantly above 3500 rpm
I've been tracking down a weird engine rpm related noise for a little while now and am pretty sure its either the alternator or the power steering pump. I recently discovered a troubling anomoly with the charging system which points me in the direction of a bad alternator.
As the rpms raise, the voltage increases up until I hit 3500rpm at which point it literally drops like a dumptruck off a cliff. Also the accesory 'noise' that I have been trying to isolate changes as well.
Is this a clear indication that my alternator is dead?
Can it be rebuilt or should I pony up and buy a new one?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Battery voltage drops significantly above 3500 rpm
It would be unusual, but if you have bad bearings
in the alternator then you could get into some
brush skip at higher RPM if the shaft is wobbling.
And hear some funny noises.
Bearings are replaceable but you might have to
find a "real auto electrical shop" or rebuilder;
I don't think I've ever seen them as part of your
DIY rebuild kit.

Re: Battery voltage drops significantly above 3500 rpm
Thanks for the response. Just some further observations today. It is definitely a problem with the alternator at 3500 rpms. Right around that area, the voltage meter starts jumping around from 14 to 10 volts, anything higher and it just drops to whatever voltage is stored in the batter.... definitely not a good thing.
I guess I'm gonna take the sure bet and just replace the alternator and hope it solves the problem.
Anyone else have any suggestions?????

My car was doing the same thing, it was the Alternator, I replaced it with a new one and all is well now, it was making a strange whirring sound right before it tanked out too.
