somthing every 98 ls1 owner should do....
I guess im posting this in the correct place....if not mods can move it....
I had done a little research on the 98 knock sensors....
I found that they pull somthing like 4* of timing auromaticly....I thought it was bs myself but then one of mine went bad along with a cam sensor...
I replaced both knock sensors and the harness....the plug ins on the newer sensors are different so the newer harness has to be used....
This was one of the best performance mods ive done to the car....It sounds crazy but it unleashed a level of
that i had never seen in the car...
This topic really hasnt been discussed alot"I searched"
so i thought id share.....

I'm pretty sure this was only on the '98 cars built before a certain date. I've had mine on my scanner numberous times and always had 0* of knock retard while sitting still and while driving around. Anyways, I think it was just the real early built ones or something, I'll try and find out. I freaked out the first time I heard this too, it's cause from them getting wet and messing up I believe.

Yes, they changed to the "new" knock sensors during production. My car was built late in the run and it has the new style knock sensors and harness. Never had a problem with knock or false knock.

my car was an early 98 I guess one of the first ones......
I got the harness and sensors for free....they were off an 04 truck engine that my bro in law had replaced...the engine they sent him was a takeout anf had all the sensors on it....the sensors were low mileage sop i used them.....
the job is simple all you have to do is pull the intake and there directly under it....took me 2hrs but 1/2 an our of that was scraping gaskets"metal intake"....
your local dealership can tell you which sensors you have with your vin # and they can also be purchased there as well.....

Get all the parts from sdpc2000.com. Here are the number you need.
12589867 sensors, this replaced 10456603
12601822 new harness.
I just ordered both and the total was around $130.

So... what exactly is this gonna do to the car?? I dont know much/anything about Knock Sensors I bet i have the old knock sensors... Build date for my car is November of 97. Just make the car run smoother?? I'll be replacing the intake manifold soon, so i might be interested in this, for the $130 you guys are talking about.

If your 98 suffers from knock retard then upgrading to the newer style will in most cases ease some of the knock retard. A false knock will retard the timing making you lose horsepower. since I am upgrading intakes I figured I might as well change out the knock sensors for peice of mind and because the old ones have 88000 miles on them.

I can attest to this aswell, my car always pulled timing and recieved KR, we desenstized them and didn't get too much help. I had a new motor put in because of an issue with my old one, the new one came with 02 sensor and I haven't had a problem since.
Edit: My car was built 09/22/97
