Default Stock Catback with LT Headers W/ ORY, retarded?

I see that almost all catbacks out there give you about 5hp, maybe 7-10 if your lucky. I don't want to spend $800 for 7hp. With that said and done, I am in the following situation:

I have been given a set of hooker LT and OR-Y as a gift. I want to install the headers and Y-pipe and get a tune, but leave the stock catback, MAYBE change the muffler ( if you guys say I HAVE to ).

I searched to see if someone has done this but didn't find anything. Will it sound horrible or remain a pretty much stock sound? Will I only get half the HP from a LT/ORY mod if i leave the stock catback?

I don't know that much about exhaust anyways, so is this even possible? The stock catback is like 2' i think, but the Y-pipe I have is like 2.5 or 3' ( not sure ).

What do the LS1tech exhaust gods think about this idea? Will it be horrible , or does the stock catback flow good enough it will only rob me of around 5-10 hp?

Is your stock cat-back from the Z28 or do you have the SLP dual/dual?

I'd imagine it would only rob you of a few if its the stock Z28 exhaust, but if I were you I'd just get a cut-out...get the noise and power when you want it for cheap.

I have Dynatech LTs with cats into the stock exhaust. I figure I am losing some power with the stock pipes and muffler but you cannot hear the exhaust at all at cruise except for a few select areas through the gears where there is a little resonance. When I give it some gas though it is pretty different than stock. Louder and a bit more like a sports car. At idle it doesn't quite have the Tahoe exhaust note any longer. I do have an LS6 cam though so that may be part of it, but for the most part I think the LTs are what improved the sound.

edit: also the stock catback is 2.75in. There was a post that the stock diameter pipes were lossless at 310hp and that 3in were lossless at 370hp. I do not know how well or poorly the stock muffler is but people have made some significant gains at the wheels with aftermarket setups, more than 7-10hp. It certainly is a quiet OEM muffler so it probably isn't the greatest thing since sliced bread for performance.

I ran the slp longtubes and ory through a stock 01 z/28 catback. The car just sounded weird. Def not what I was expecting. It had a high pitch to it and kinda sounded like a retarted mustang. It is not going to be a deep muscle car sound that you are going to get using the stock exhaust. I used it for about 2 months before buying an slp dual dual exhuast. I absolutely love the sound now. Quiet as a kitten at idle and it get meaner as the rpms go up. Excellent setup for long drives too no drone or rasp in the cabin. I would put a cutout on before I would weld a muffler on your car

FTRA

no tuning, stock SS cat back made 340/358

I ran my LT's and ORY through the stock cat-back for a couple weeks. It sounded HORRIBLE and did hurt performance. I picked up .2-.3 in the 1/8th after the switch to a Hooker. The DA was a bit better, but not that much better. The stock cat-back was choking the car. The car runs much better now and sounds awsome too. If you don't get the cat-back, at least switch to a better muffler.

If you're not sure it won't hurt to leave it alone and see how you like it and make your decision then.

stock catback is costing 7 - 10 hp basically on a stock car. Once you get headers and remove the manifolds and cats as the big restriction, the stock catback becomes a bigger issue. An electric cut-out is a good way to go if you like quiet and need max HP only at the track or when you can anticipate in advance going to WOT.

I agree with the cut-out. With an ORY your screwed with about any catback as far as being loud. Loudmouth exhausts are fairly cheap if you decide you dont care about the sound. But Id def stay away from the LM1

I made 348/352 at the wheels with Pacesetter LTs, TSP ORY, and a stock SS catback. Mine didn't sound horrible, either.

check my sig. I wish i had the whole slp dual dual setup, but i just have the muffler and it barely makes any noise except around 2k, you hear a tiny rumble. I think its hurting my power, however im going to the dyno on saturday and im going to dyno with the cutout open and closed to see how much if any difference there is.

Might as well get a quality catback to maximize your exhaust gains and finish it up. Most get a catback as a first mod, you're lucky to have the header issue squared away already.

BTW, a cutout with an ORY is going to sound like ****, and be ungodly loud.

With cats, yeah, it's loud, you can live with it, but without...**** man!

He has an ORY setup, that's why I'm not even recommending a cutout.
