Default ls6 intake manifold installed. Car runs Funny.

So i have a 98 ta. I just got done installing the ls6 intake manifold. Taking it off went easy. Of coarse i broke the oil pressure sending unit, even though i tried not to. I got a new one, and put that in. The oil pressure gauge works, so thats all good. I Got the Egr block off plates from speed inc. All of those are on, and nice and tight. Everything is hooked back up otherwise.

Car idles good for the most part. Every once and a while it will have a little pop or studder, but its not all the time. I took it out, and got on it, went through first and second gear, car great, pulled hard. When i got off it, with the clutch in, and the car in neutral the rpms fell only to 2k ish. They didn't go down to normal idle for a while. THen i got on it again, and it hesitated around 3k, for a couple seconds, then pulled hard to redline. I then babied it around without to much problem, but i was rolling around a corner and(again car in neutral, and the rpm's went up a little above 2k then went down to idle.

Anyone know what these symptos could be cause from? the car doesn't really run bad, its just a little funny? IS the ecu learning the new intake manifold and adjusting cause its seeing more air? I scanned it but the only codes i had were no activity on rear 02's, and egr.

I dont think i have any misfires, all wires are hooked up, all injectors, in? Any ideas would be appreciaited. Thanks, Chris

sounds like you may have a small vac leak. Was it torqued down properly with good gaskets?

a tweak in your tune will prob fix that, you added more air to your motor(not much but might be enough to make it pop).

Yea, i borrowed a friends matco inc pounds torque wrench, its the kind that clicks when you hit the setting. I did exactly as the directions say. 44 then 89 in the correct order to. Gaskets are all good, all lines are hooked back up. Tommorrow ill fill it up with gas, and let it run for a little bit, and see if it gets any better. ANy other ideas? Thanks guys, Chris

Sometimes these cars can lean out a little from switching to the bigger intake. I had the same problem. Took it to my tuner and within a few minutes it was fine again. Good luck!

Mine threw a code but then fixed itself. I think it was p0122 or something like that. How do the plugs look?

WHen i have more time tommorrow and im not in a monsoon, ill drive the car around more, and see if it learns or throws a code. Car only ran for maybe 5 minutes tonight. Weather got real bad real quick, and i was tired.

Plugs are maybe 1 mo's old. I put new Ngk Iridiums in when i did the headers. The plugs might have 500 miles on them. I pulled 1, looks perfect, and gaps were all good. Car ran perfect before this swap, so thats why im thinking maybe something i took apart got damaged, or its just learning.....

If i had to guess id say maf, i wouldn't mind having to buy a new bigger better maf anyways. But i dont want to if i dont have to, and then have another problem im trying to deal with. I love this forum, not sure what id do with out it. Thanks, Guys

prob a small vaccum leak somewhere. make sire when you torqued the intake back down, there werent any lines that got caught un between the valley and intake, which one not let it seal up all the way, resulting in vaccum leak. this happened to mine when i had my manifold off. good luck, let us know what fixes it.

You nailed it on the head... Sorta... I never took the plastic clips off the knock sensor wires, not allowing the intake mani to sit properly.. so i thought after researching more. I looked at it while installing, but thought it wouldn't be a problem.

So i got up the energy to take it all back apart, this time my gf slipped her arm back there and managed to pull the main vacum line so i didn't break the oil pressure sensor again. Took those clips off, put it all back together, making sure no chance anything was under there. Torque it all back down to spec, get it put back together, and as soon as i started it, gave it a little rev, i knew it was better. Well it wasn't acting like it did before. So i took it for a little ride, it hesitated a little bit for a minute or two, but then that went away. I did several pulls without any problems. Car definatly feels alot better in the higher rpms. Thanks again guys, and for anyone that comes across this thread in the future make sure you take those clips off!....

Thanks again, Chris

Pipes are cheap at about $30 on eBay. Sell the stock ones with your stock LS1 intake manifold and have a clean not-fucked-with LS6 just incase you ever upgrade and you want to sell it. Why hack up something that costs $300

Yeah dude, if your getting high RPM's after an intake swap, sounds like a vacuum leak.

Did you?
-Oil up the manifold gaskets?
-Remove the tape and green clips from the knock sensor harness?
-Get LS6 coolant plugs?
-All the hoses in the back out of the way of the manifold?

Just a few things that come to mind

I just smeared a little engine oil on them to help them seat nice.

I got the new pipes. I got it all fixed. It was the clips on the knock sensors. I did not hack up the ls6 intake mani at all. Car runs alot better and in the upper rpms, definatly pulls harder.

The car has a new problem. The ses light comes on, When i scan it it is coolant temp sensor high input. The coolant temp sensor is under 1 month old. It was broke when i picked up the car, and i put a new one in. It worked after that with no check engine light, untill now, after the inatake manifold install. The gauge works, but when i scan the car it says the coolant is -39 degress C. Is there a ground or something i might of miss making the sensor not work? the sensor is plugged in, and looks in good condition. Thanks, Chris
